you can make them out of royal icing and then dust them gently with luster dust. Hope that helped thumbs_up.gif

You can make them outta candy melts, white chocolate....
Print out the font and size ya want, tape the paper to a cookie sheet, tape some wax paper over that, then pipe over it...you can paint it with luster dusts...

You could also make them out of fondant or gumpaste and use a clay extruder, or just roll them out with your hands. After they're dry, mix luster dust (super pearl is my recommendation) with lemon extract (1/4 teaspoon dust to 1 teaspoon extract) and paint the letters.

I did a bridal shower cake with the letters on the top, and made them from fondant, and dry-brushed Super Pearl on them. It actually made it a little easier to stick sticks in the letters, and then I placed straws in the cake and slid the sticks right in. I have attatched a pic, where you can see the sticks going into the straw.

just like Wendoger said in the previous post....easy stuff....you can definately do this

and by the way, I attach mine to lollipop sticks with more melted candy after theyve set up....and then I insert in the cake upon delivery... HTH

I have made these several ways, some with chocolate, some with royal, but for a permanent keepsake topper, I found the wooden letters at Hobby Lobby with an oval wooden base, grooved the oval base slightly so the letters would set inside and glued them in, I gave it many coats of the silver shiny paint and then put a clear acrylic coat on . It turned out real nice and the couple had a topper to save. I have done this for 50th anniversary toppers as well. You can add the crystals to it to give it a more glamourous look.

I like doing the lettering in RI. I print them on my computer, place wax paper over then pipe. Let it dry for a couple of days then Luster Dust. Couple of hints to keep in mind. I usually do a couple I've always had one break, this way I have a spare. I try to give my lettering two layers for strength. And the biggest no-no, I learned the hard way, don't put it directly on buttercream or whipped icing. Good Luck!

I did 50 swirly heart designs for cupcake toppers it took about 5 minutes for the parts touching the icing to melt and the toppers to fall off. They still tasted good and I learned something. icon_smile.gif

So by reading this, the best choice for me is fondant or gumpaste. Right? I have to do mini cakes for the wedding party. I don't want any problems that day.

I still think RI is the easiest, especially if your making alot, and they come out cleaner, you can get very fancy with the lettering. Maybe you could put a toothpick in in bottom to keep it from touching your icing.

I agree that royal icing lets you get fancy with the lettering. But I believe you can achieve fancy with gumpaste as well. Plus gumpaste can be rolled thicker and is much more sturdy than royal, especially sticking into cake.

Look in my photos at the 1 topper and a J on the dots cake (just adding). Thsoe are both gumpaste. Just paint with super pearl.

When you cut out the letter leave about a 2 inch tab at the bottom so you can stick it into the cake and not worry about it falling over.

I roll my gumpaste about 1/4" thick for the toppers....I HATE when things break at the last minute. WHat do I do then?

Good luck...Julia

Breakage. I made a fondant ark several days ago. It was top heavy and cracked in half as I was putting it into the box. It was a Wilton design (my second to go wrong from them). Anyway, I had to hot glue it to cardboard so that it could still be used as the customer was coming to pick it up in a couple of hours. I was so mad.

Hello -

I have a question concerning using the candy melts to make initials. I've been reading and keeping up with this post and decided that I would try making the initials today out of the candy melts.

I melted them in the microwave, and once they were melted and smooth I added a few drops of Americolor red to it and began stirring - and the mixture became very stiff, very quickly. I tried nuking it again and that still didn't help to smooth it out. Do I need to add some cream or flavoring oil to it? Or is it just the red coloring that is the problem?

There is no way I could pipe anything from this mixture the way it is right now.

Thanks,
Suzycakes

Unfortunately that will nto work. You have to add flo-coat by americolor to get the chocoalte to take color. Or there are chocolate colors you can buy.

I have not had good exp with flocoat so I jsut get the candy colors.
Thanks

Julia
