On occasion you find find a Brother sewing machine at Walmart for under $80. They are a good model for the price. Gives you all the basic stiches. Before I bought mine, I borrowed one from a friend and believe it or not - I was able to make my wedding dress on it. I evently bought a more expensive one that has all the emboirdery stitches on it.
But, check the Brother machines out at Wal*mart out - even on line. You might even be able to find one on ebay
I hate to be contrary, but I have not heard manything good about machines from Wal-Mart. Their Brother machine are a 'Wal-Mart Special' meaning that the parts are all cheap and the inside is very, VERY different (weaker, sometimes made of plastic, chintzy) than a Brother bought from a dealer. Two different sewing machine repair people (who do not sell machines!) have told me this, that most machines from Wal-Mart are not worth repairing. Anything at Sam's Club is the same story, my machine from there was a piece of junk and needed servicing every other week. Not worth the money saved. Of course, YMMV, and I sew a LOT, so it could be okay for just simple repairs, but still, you can find similarly priced machines that are not from Wal-Mart.
Look on overstock.com for a good machine at a low price...I got my Brother embroidery machine for 300.00 and it works great- and I am a professional seamstress, so it's used at least 3-4 hours a day. I have not had any problems, despite it being refurbished. They have simple, cheaper models as well. A Kenmoore from Sear's is also a good choice. Singers are not the machines they used to be, an old Singer is a great find but a new one is not so great.
Good luck! Happy sewing!
I would suggest going to or calling sewing machine repair shops/people and see if you can get a good machine that for a low price that they have repaired at thier shop. That is what I did and got an older machine for less $$. But it works beautifully and is an all metal machine - which is less likely to break than todays cheeper plastic ones. I am sure someone will disagree with me on that point but it is just my opinion. Good luck!

That's a GREAT ideas= and older machines made of all metal are a lot better than a plastic machine. Some of the Singers now have plastic insides- yuck!
I have been sewing on the same machine for many years. It is a White. My Mother, Grandmother and Sister all use the White and they are all seamstesses. Purchase an older machine at a yardsale or auction. They are not too pricey and will last a long time. I even do denim with mine and it is not a heavy duty model.
Good Luck.
I've had my Brother sewing machine from Wal-Mart for about 5 years now and I've never had any problems with it. I used to sell dolls on ebay and my website site so it was used a lot. I don't have any complaints about it .... It's worked great for me.
Hugs, ~Denise
thanks evryone!!! I'll probably try out the brother machine from wal-mart, since if it doesn't suit me I can always take it back. If that doesn't work out my mom knows of a lady who repairs and sellls machines. Thanks again for all the help!!!
