The school I work at was having Aloha week the last week before summer vacation. So I made an Aloha cake.

I decided to be really creative with the inside of the cake and made it Neapolitan. Got the idea from Martha Stewart Wedding magazine. I got to make chocolate ganache and strawberry buttercream. The chocolate was awesome and everyone said the strawberry was better. I have to trust their opinions on that because I am allergic to strawberry. icon_cry.gif

I hand carved the palm trees and cookie cuttered the letters for this creation. It was so humid the week I made this that it took 3 days for my decorations to dry. Generally, it only takes one day.

Originally, it was to be covered in white fondant, but that ended up cracking and breaking everywhere when I put it on the cake. Aarrgg! So I pulled it off and rebuttercreamed the the whole darn thing. It is not as smooth as I know I can make my buttercream, but at 9 at night I knew my coworkers wouldn't care about smoothness. After I put my kids down to sleep I went back to work on the cake and finished it at around 11:30.

When I took it in the next morning, no one would cut it. They didn't want to cut into my "fondant" covered cake. I told them it was buttercream and if they didn't cut in then I would after an hour. An hour later it was still whole, so I took a knife to it at 9. By 12:30, the whole thing was gone.

So what do ya'll think? Opinions?

I had to view it by going into your "photos" but Wow, WoW, WOW! Awesome job. I love the letters with the leaves as accents. Terrific job. I agree, I would feel terrible cutting into it.

I already commented on the photo in the galery - but to state it again...I love this cake. It's not to over the top. I've got to do a luau cake in two weeks and think I may take some of your inspiration with me.

I couldn't tell you have any problems with it at all. Good job.

Thanks guys. You're making my head swell up. Need to go and get a needle to pop it. I was kinda proud of it myself b/c it was only the 4th or 5th cake I've ever made.

I'm working on the philosophy of one cake a month to try out new techniques. I don't know what I am doing this month, but I am making a butterfly b-day cake in July for a co-worker and two cakes in August. I also have another one coming up, but the client doesn't know what they want yet. I'm going to get paid for the cakes! YES!!!! The good news is, everyone is giving me free reign over the cakes b/c they know I am learning and they like to see what I come up with. Life can't get much better than that.
