There are several good "not too sweet" recipes here on CC. Last night I concocted a new recipe that was great and less sweet than usual. Here it is:

4 sticks butter (I use real butter)
11/2 cups Crisco
8 cups powdered sugar
1 cup of castor sugar (you could substitute 1 cup of powdered sugar)
1 envelope Dream Whip
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon Creme Bouquet flavoring (you could leave this out if you don't have it)

Mix together for about 2 minutes on med-high speed. I didn't have to add any liquid, but if it's too stiff you could add a little water.

Yes, it does crust. Not a heavy crust, but enough to be able to use the Melvira method or Viva to smooth it.

The recipe sounds great and can't wait to try, but was wondering what castor sugar is, never used it, what does it add to the frosting, is there a big difference if you use powdered sugar instead? thanks

I use the White as Snow Buttercream recipe. I was also looking for a not too sweet buttercream, and since I've used this one, I've gotten more good reviews than any other frosting I've used (besides the cream cheese frosting, still number one!)
Crusts very well, easy to smooth, I've used it with the Melvira method and it comes out flawless.

Do you use salted or unsalted butter?

Castor sugar is super, super fine sugar. I just happened to have some and ran out of powdered sugar so I used the castor sugar. It made the frosting have a very, VERY slight grain to it. If you use all PS it will likely be just a little bit smoother in texture.

I posted my recipe on this site. Here's the link:

I tried many bc recipes and finally came up with one that is less sweet and tastes really great! Hope you like it!
