Hi Everyone! I love this site, and maybe one day I will get brave enough to post some of my pictures on here! I'm too chicken just yet - some of the cakes I've seen on here just blow me away!

Anyhow, my question has to do with stacking cakes. I've never done this before and I'm clueless. My daughters 8th birthday is this month, and I'm planning on attempting a castle cake for her (she's having an Ariel party for the 5th year in a row, and I'm getting bored making the mermaid cake year after year!). Anyhow, I'm planning on having a 10" square bottom layer, an 8" square layer on top of that, and a 6" round on top of that. Do I need to put anything inbetween the layers to keep the cake from collasping on itself?

Also, had my hairdresser ask me about making a cake for her husbands 30th birthday coming up - on fathers day. He is a new dad as well ..... if she asks again, any ideas for decorating a cake like that? Keep in mind that I am a newbie and haven't really done FBC transfers or anything like that ....

Thanks in advance for your help - I know someone can help me!

First of all welcome to CC... Lot of great people on here! The best advice I have for stacking cakes is using dowel rods... and when you use them make a point on the end so they will go down into the cardboard...
One of the cutest castle cakes I think was done by gmcakes.. altho she said she hated making it I think she did an excellant job and she gives great tips... Might PM her but here is the link to her cake.... Very cute for a little girl..

Yes, you need to dowel and use cardboard supports for a stacked cake like you described. There is a very good article with pictures on how to do it here:

I recently did a castle cake, it is the first cake in my photo gallery. Feel free to PM me with any questions! I loved doing it, I got to channel my inner 5-year-old girl!
