I am making a 3 tier cake for a very special lady's 85th birthday party this weekend. Her favorite color is blue, and I would like to ice the bottom and top tiers in white bc and place blue ribbon on the bottom of the tiers, and for the middle tier, I would like to ice in a matching blue bc and use a diamond impression mat and edible pearls........I have a couple of questions......How to I attach ribbon on a cake with bc icing? Would it look odd if I put ribbon on the middle tier along with the other things I will decorate it with? Finally, for a topper, would a large bow in the ribbon look silly, or should I use silk flowers or something? If anyone has examples or photos of similar cakes, I would be grateful.......TIA

you can just wrap the ribbon around the bottom and "glue" the ends together with a dab of bc, or you can use clear tape (which is what i do). you can if you want iron wax paper to the back of the ribbon to keep the grease from soaking through, or you can just let the grease soak in uniformly so the whole ribbon looks the same either way. does that make sense? i think your cake will look very pretty. i would have ribbon on the middle tier too, even with the other stuff. and on the top a bow with ribbon would look nice, but i think flowers would too. so i'd go either way. guess that part wasn't too helpful, huh? lol.

I use ribbon allot on my cakes. I just attach a small dot on the back side and then lightly pull the ribbon around till I get back to the back....apply another small dot. Then I take a Viva paper towel and lightly go over the ribbon so it will stick good. Never had a problem with it coming off. Now...with some ribbons, it will pick up the icing and darken....so you can iron the ribbon first onto a piece of waxed paper.....then trim the paper off and attach to the cake....works pretty good. I usually will get the shade lighter and by the time it darkens....it's the color they wanted. Here is a cake I did this past weekend....and the girl had me make bows to match.

I did ribbon on a wedding cake and I didn't want it to change color. I just attached a slightly smaller piece of wax paper behind the ribbon and then wrapped it around the cake. There were no problems at all.
You can also dip the ribbon in a little bit of oil and squeeze the excess out and then it already has grease in it so it won't get splotchy. I prefer the first method. I like to find the ribbon in the exact color it is going to need to be.

Looks like you have lots of advice. I have ironed my ribbon between wax paper so both sides are covered just to be sure there's no leakage. I've used double sided tape, piping gel or a dab of b/c to attach. I just love ribbon on a cake it looks so pretty. Also fondant bows are beautiful as well as fabric - either way is a nice touch. Silk or real flowers work too.

Wow..........thank you for all the advice.........now I have another question- with ironing the ribbon on wax paper.......doesn't that melt the wax paper?

I agree with the above on looks alone. The ribbon will be beautiful on all three tiers and will tie them together nicely. As far as technique, I am learning with you. Good luck!

Hi,
To answer your question I put a piece of paper towel on top and underneath the waxed paper so as not to get wax on the iron or ironing board. Keep the iron on low. It really works well. Good luck and pm me if you have any questions. icon_razz.gif
