My husband has been telling the guys he works with that I do cakes so one of them wanted me to do a tractor cake for him. I asked my husband if he wanted a picture of a tractor on the cake or if he wanted the cake to be shaped like a tractor. He said he wasn't sure so I printed some pictures from here just to give him an idea of what I was talking about since I haven't done any like that yet. I was only sending the pictures as a guide since the guys didn't know much about cakes. My husband comes home and tells me that he wants this cake. It just so happens that this is the type of tractor that his dad has and the cake is for his birthday. It took me a few minutes to realize that my husband told him I could do that exact cake. icon_surprised.gif I told my husband that I just sent those pictures to give him an idea of what I was talking about and that I couldn't do an exact copy. This is the first order I have gotten from his work so I want to give the guy what he wants and do a good job. First, I do get a lot of ideas from here but I like to make the cake my own. Second, I am pretty sure the background was done with an airbrush. Am I right? I told my husband about the background and he asked me if I could just get an airbrush to do it. icon_confused.gif He hasn't even let me get a kitchenaid yet because of the price. icon_cry.gif I think he thought it was like a paint brush or something. Anyway, here is my question. Other than the trees, can I do this with the wiltons spray cans and have it look anywhere decent? I thought I would leave the trees out and hope he doesn't remember the picture. I don't have to do it until the end of the month. The only problem that I can see is that when I do the FBCT I do the entire top of the cake together and then smooth it once it is on the cake. I would have to spray the background on around the transfer. I don't know if I could get close enough to the tractor without getting the green into the picture. Has anyone ever tried this before?

I know that Sugarcraft do edible images that just transfer onto the cake. Not sure if they do a tractor though. Maybe other supplies companies do something similar.

The wilton sprays will work. I personally wouldn't do it all airbrush. Blue maybe for the sky and green if you'd like. For the brown I would make my own road out of choc. frosting. I'd color green frosting smooth it out where it needs to be and then use a grass tip for the grass spots. For the trees I would use icing brown & green. The FBTC will cover a lot of the cake, also any little mistakes too.

This is airbrushed, but it is a really simple design. Couldn't you do something similar with icing? You could smooth blue icing on the upper half and green on the bottom. It will be a little messy where they meet, but cover it by making grass, bushes, and trees with a tube. Make the ground area icing rough on purpose to give texture.

I'm sure it doesn't have to be exact. People don't see the same things we do when they look at a cake. All he sees is the tractor his Dad had with an outside scene. You could make it look like a plowed field or add plants to cover boo-boos. Have fun and be creative! You can do this easily with a FBCT.

Be brave!

I agree with Jenn123, you could make it your own. I'm pretty sure that the guy only 'saw' the tractor, and so as long as that's on there, I don't think the background is going to make much of a difference. Do what you think looks good...it'll look a lot better if you do what your comfortable with, rather then trying something you aren't comfortable with. If you think he wants it exact, just write a small note and let him know before hand that the pictures you sent were just rough ideas, and though the cake will look similar, it won't be exact. I'm sure he'll understand.
