Ok my friend calls last night wants a cake for her husband's birthday for him to take to work. He works night shifts poor him! Anyways he likes indy cars but she realizes with such short notice gives me time for almost nothing, so she likes the racetrack flag design on the sides of my
lighting mcqueen car
<-----------------

but does not want grass icon_sad.gif but just plain writing on it , ok so I was going to add a border on each edge but which kind of border can I put on a man's cake without it looking girlish? Can you tell I've never made a manly cake? Also the writing I am so scared cause I am so not good but have been practicing and does writing matter or does it have to be special writing for men? besides border and writing what else can I add to give it more life? I was thinking red letters but if I do that can I do a white or red border please help me!!!!I don't think I'm making any sense now

Sorry forgot to attach picture

Shell borders, star borders, large dot borders ..... none of those are really "girlish"....they're just cake borders.

What about dots? Those can be manly. As for the writing do your best!! It's all you can do. GOOD LUCK icon_smile.gif

Maybe you could bring the checkerboard design up over the edge a bit to serve as the top border. I wouldn't worry about any special writing. Maybe do some small crossed checkered flags on top?

I would go with dots. If you are looking for something to put on the cake, you could put some racing flags. I don't know if you could do the indy logo on short notice.

I would go with what ever writing you are best at. Print should look fine if that's your best.

Good luck!

You couldn't just use the grass as a border, with red writing in more of a block print, maybe?? Or is she just totally against grass?? I love the checkerboard pattern though....very cool and manly!! icon_lol.gif

She is not against grass I think she thinks it might look childish my Mcqueen cake looks childish only because of mcqueen not the grass I hate to do something and totally disregard her wishes I also don't think she realizes no racetrack cake is no racetrack cake without grass but that's just me.

What if you made it look like part of the track, like your McQueen cake (the track itself black and around it gray then made the "finish Line" and wrote Happy B-day on the finish line with the flags?? Just a thought!! Good Luck!

Could you do a racetrack around the top of the cake for the border? Black fondant with yellow b/c "lane dividers"?

This is NHRA drag racing, not IRL, but you could put the starting lights they use for that. Pictured in the link below. I would definitely add a top and bottom border of dots using red, green, or yellow, or any combination.

Good luck.

I did a cake along these lines that the person wanted it to look like one of the kit cakes (she bought the kit). On the bottom right corner I put a thin coat of green buttercream (I don't have an airbrush) and on the top corner I used a large round tip and piped rows from the road to the corner. Then used colored confiti dots for people in the stands (you could pipe different colored dots). Used the large round tip to outline the road. Then used the large round tip again to make a red shell boarder around the bottom and a yellow one arount the top edge. The round tip 10 or 11 is not as frilly as the star tip. I did use the grass tip for a tuft of grass here and there, but you could use that corner to write on. A Hotwheels car with white puffs that thin out to lines like smoke coming out of a burn out.

Maybe you could do the ball border using black and white and stick with the checkerboard theme. Put black balls where the white is and white balls where the black is. Hope that makes sense? I was thinking you could probably still add a road to the top and put your writing over that but that would probably be a little too much black. Does Indy racing have some sort of logo or does the customer like a certain car that you could take something from that to put on the top?

Why not bring the blk and white up over the edge and put a rope border on the inside? Very male looking nothing female.

your ideas are great but what sucks is that it is already 3pm my time and my living room is still a disaster and my friend is coming at 5pm to pick up the cake but I was thinking of doing a black dot border with like tip 10 in black all around the bottom and white dot border on the top or should I do alternating black and white dots and just keep it a black and white with red writing cake short notice simple cake I am only doing it cause I can't say no to her but if it was just anybody i would never agree on a cake on the night before icon_sad.gif

I like the race track idea.

If you don't want to do that - I say dots for a boarder.
