I tried to do some RI dots and everytime I try I end up with more of a dash. I want them tiny so am using a tip one. Cannot figure out how you all get those dainty little dots! As soon as I stop pressure and lift the tip the icing stretches and then falls to the side making a dash...grrr.

TIA

try this...make your dot, stop pressure, make a swirl and pull the tip away to the side. Making the swirl should break the icing and keep it from stretching. OR maybe thinner icing??

If you're using royal and it 'stretches' as you mentioned, it may be TOO loose. Try adding a little powdered sugar to firm it up a tiny bit. That way it won't stretch as much.

For those 'points' that always seem to happen, I tear off a 2" by 2" square of Viva paper towel, cover my index fingertip and gently pat them down. Just a quick pat and they're gone! icon_smile.gif

RI can definitely be tapped down to make your dots round on top. It's very forgiving and pliable for awhile after you use it. I've heard to put a little cornstarch on your fingers first but I've never done that yet and still haven't had any problem.

I just realized that it must be the icing I'm using....duh!!!! icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif I used toba's glaze for my cookies and just use that for the details....so, since it has corn syrup as an ingredient that must be the issue. I'm embarassed. icon_redface.gif I should have realized that. I guess I'll have to stop being lazy and make royal for accents.

Thanks for all you're help.

You could also use a very small decorator's brush, dipped in cornstarch, and smooth the tip of them out right after you make them.
