Difference Between Sugarpaste And Fondant?
Decorating By lanesmom Updated 7 May 2007 , 8:01pm by lanesmom
I was looking on a cake decorator's website and she said she was covering her cakes in sugarpaste. I had never heard of it before so I did some research and found that it is the same thing as gum paste. I thought gum paste was only used for making flowers since it got really hard. So, what is the difference between sugarpaste (gum paste) and fondant? How does it taste? Any info would be appreciated.
To add to what Shirley said...
I went to Ohio ICES DOS last weekend and Geraldine Randlesome (sp?), from Geraldine's Creative Cutters was a demonstrator. She asked all of us decorators this very same question as a test. She explained that there is essentially no difference at all- and she should know since she was born in England!
I was glad to know the answer as I have often looked at my ACD magazines and wondered the very same thing!
Shirley's right, what we call sugarpaste here is the same as your rolled fondant. Gumpaste is similar to what we call flowerpaste.
The majority of people in the UK cover their cakes with sugarpaste as it's so readily available. There's a recipe for it here
