Its just funny...I did two cakes this past weekend...one was a more challenging project (stork and baby bear) and one was a more "average" project, a 3D ducky on round "bubble bath" cake just done in buttercream (did not post a photo) with some cupcakes. I was excited with how the stork turned out and then with my ducky, I had raised prices and so was kind of hoping the person didn't pay all that money and then have people be like "Well good grief I could buy that cake mold and make that myself!" haha.

Well it turns out the ducky customer RAVED about her cake in an email to me this morning and said everyone was complimenting it and loved it and she handed out my cards and told them all about my website.

No word from the stork lady so I just sent off a nice short email hoping the party went okay and hoping the guest of honor liked her cake. She wrote back saying SHE was the guest of honor (I didn't realize she ordered her own cake!) and saying how she did very much like the cake and would order more... but it was just interesting how the more simple cake was completely loved by the guests and the one I slaved over was like "Ok cool great cake thanks!"

I guess it depends on the personality!!!!

I'm always surprised, too, by what impresses the average non-cake-decorator person.

For instance, my cousin e-mailed me to say she and her daughter had been looking at my cake pictures on my family website. The cake they were most impressed with was my bears at the swimming pool cake--one of my very first cakes ever that I copied from Woman's Day magazine! It was so funny to me that they loved that cake over my sculpted or tiered cakes.

I too made a 3-D duck cake once--for my daughter's 1st birthday 2 1/2 years ago. I thought it was so ordinary (there are many, many similar cakes on this website) that I didn't even post the picture here. However, my dh's family still talks about how amazing it was!

It is weird the different type of compliments we get on different cakes! icon_confused.gif

I think the things is that some people just haven't had a specialized cake made for them or seen one that they can't believe that it can be done. Other times I have seen that people oo and ahh over stuff cause they aren't crafty and they wish they could do that stuff but wouldn't.

It is weird then you get a lower reaction to something you worked so hard on. Maybe that person wasn't like crazy complimenting cause they knew what they were ordering? icon_confused.gif
People are not all the same.

It's so strange when you find what makes more people rave, isn't it?! Sometimes it seems those you stress over the most produce the quietest comments...except from your own family members! I have learned I get way more positive feedback when I send pics to my mom and sister!! LOL I think a lot of times people just don't take the time to tell you how much they liked something.

I made a cake last summer that I was THRILLED about. I thought it was one of the greatest cakes and totally fit the birthday boy to a T. I didn't hear a single word-I finally stopped sulking and forgot about it. That was in July. Last month the wife contacted me, RAVING about how wonderful that cake had been and she finally needed another one. I was thrilled of course, but thought that was so strange to hear positive feedback NINE months after the event! LOL

Maybe people just see it as a business transaction like any other... they feel as long as they are happy there is no need to give feedback.

I guess doing this has made me realize how important a nice comment is, so there have even been a couple times where I have ordered something online and gotten great customer service, that I made sure I wrote and thanked the company for great service. I guess though people sometimes figure as long as they got what they paid for, the deal is done and there is no need to contact us until they need us again.

Tell me about it. People are weird. I delivered a 3 teired cake with a 3D MMF castle on the top and a MMF ivy cascade. The MOB went on and on about how pretty the 1/2 sheet cake was that was there for extra servings!! UGGH!!!! It would have been alot easier to make sheet cakes!!!

There seems to be a whole lot of angry people now-a-days. Everyone expects more for less. When expectations aren't met, complain away but they've forgotten to compliment when their expectations have been surpassed.

I LOVE your stork cake, you did an excellent job!

Some people could not give a compliment to save their lives. It is very frustrating sometimes. But very pleasing when you bake a cake for people who couldn't thank you enough.

Yeah I know this lady was like raving over what she wanted, she was hoping I would "make my best cake ever" for her shower and she was SO excited about the prospect of the cake....so I'm not sure if she expected something bigger or...? Again she was very happy with the cake and thanked me and said she would order again but I guess I didn't sense the thrill I had expected judging by her enthusiasm while ordering. Oh well!

And thanks for the nice comments about my stork! I was real nervous about it.
