I've never done a ball cake...and the mom is picking it up, so is there anything I should know before starting? It'll probably be a 3-D ball on top of a round cake decorated with grass under it, etc. I'm assuming I should dowel it.

Also wondering about covering with fondant or just regular icing stars?

ANY tips would be so appreciated, really...anything...anything at all...

Thanks!

I did a 9 x 13 of a soccer shoe/ankle - sock kicking a soccerball. - Inspired by a Wilton cake from a yearbook actually....Then used a bowl and made a 1/2 ball - decorated it like a soccer ball. Made cupcakes in the soccer papers...grass on top...with those hard - royal soccar ball decorations on top and set them around the little cake. I did most everything in stars except for the grass. I have a pic but it's not posted yet..I can try to have DH do it when he comes home from work in the AM if you'd like to see it..I think it turned out really cute.

I personally avoid stars on anything if possible!

The easiest thing is... use the soccer ball pan. Trace one piece of the ball pattern and make a cardboard template. Ice the cake with buttercream and pat smooth or use fondant. Color some fondant and use the pattern you made to cut out enough to decorate the ball. Add grass and you're done.

If you put this on another cake, you will probably need to support it. I did one on a 12" 2 layer and didn't support it. It bulged out some, but survived.

Thank you guys. I'm leaning toward the fondant idea myself--stars don't appeal to me as much (or my piping hand...) It will be the ball on top of an 8" square I think, and I'm doweling it for sure, because the mom is transporting it from delivery point to home and from home to the party...hope it survives!

I have the ball pan with instructions, so I'm going to do the fondant thing if there's time. Have to bake and decorate still and deliver tomorrow at 3. Will post a pic later.
