My niece is a huge Louisvile Cardinals basketball fan. So she is wanting me to make her babies first birthday cake. She comes up with the idea to make a 3d cardinal cake, and the smash cake a basketball.

I thought that would be cute. So know I need to come up with how to make the cardinal. I have the duck pan, do you guys think you could make the cardinal out of it, and it look right ? Or would anyone suggest something else ?

Any help at all would be great. Thanks.

I looked at a pic of a cardinal and one of the duck pan. The duck has a rounder chest and head than the cardinal. If you carved some on the duck and made a fondant or gumpaste section of tail feathers to lay behind the body, I think it could be pretty good. If you do, post pics! My mom loves cardinals and that would be a great b-day cake for her one year.

Maybe you could just use the round ball pan for the body and form the head and tail out of rice crispies!?

well....

could do a wonder mold on top of rounds,

rice krispie or popcorn ball for head.

would use carved styrofoam for the feet to get stable base.

then it would be covered in fondant and detailed out.

Not sure how involved you want to be....I have a 3D falcon cake in my photos and used a simple stand to help me out. You could use almost the same idea as mine only instead of a tree stump you could do a basketball, and of course a cardinal instead of a falcon. I do not know how far you want to go with this idea though. icon_smile.gif Let me know if you'd like to try something like that.

i am convinced...doug you are a genius and a rock star all wrapped up into one. Though I have never personally asked for advice that has required your expertise, I sure save the information you give for future references. I also looked at your photos--holy moly, pattern jackpot! Thank you so much for sharing your brain with us!!!
