I just ordered the Wilton plastic dowels for a wedding cake i have next weekend, based on a suggestion from here. Having never used these before, are they used the same as wooden dowels? How many would i use in a 16-12-8-6? I'm assuming these replace the wooden dowels?

If you mean the larger, hollow white plastic ones, they replace the wooden ones, but you don't have to use as many because they are so much wider. I really like them; they're easy to cut with a kitchen knife, and they seem more clean to use.

LOVE THEM...you can actually cut them with a serrrated knife. No need for the saw or DH!!! I used 4 in my 12 this weekend...and 4 in the 8 I stacked on top of it. Then pillars and then a 6 went on top of that. Because of the hot humid weather (90's) ...I wanted to make sure this cake stayed up because it went somewhere where ther was no air cond..so I wasn't taking any chances. But, I love em'
