I am making one for the first time for my son's bday on saturday. Anyone that has made one, could you give me directions or tips or anything? I am soooo nervous about this.

What kind of cake would be good for this?

I'm making the ship from Peter Pan and it will be pretty big because I have alot of Peter Pan figures to put on it.

I feel at a loss about this, I don't even know where to start!

HELP!!!

HI, I have made one and it posted in my gallery. I started with a 9X13 WASC cake and torted it and put it in the fridge. After it firmed I carved and crumb coated it. I used MMF for the planks ( I should have crumb coated in chocolate frosting- lesson learned!) wooden rods for the masts and made the rails and anchor out of chocolate. I used many different ideas I found here on CC in the galleries, so many people have made beautiful ships! I can not be thankful enough for all the ideas that come together here! Best of luck, you will do great!

I made one..the first time was a disaster (before I discovered this website! icon_smile.gif ) It was my first time making a cake. I used a moist cake mix, fell apart because of that. The following year the boy wanted another pirate theme party so his mom (my friend) had faith in me and asked me to make another cake. This time I used a more sturdier cake..pound cake. I made a 9x13 cake, decorated it to make it look like the ocean and beach then made a pirate ship out of pound cake and placed it on the 9x13. If she asks me again to make a cake I think I'll try something different. He's still into pirates so it'll probably be another pirate theme party.

Good luck! Just use a sturdy cake is my advice! icon_biggrin.gif

I made one and have it in my photos as well. But I definitely have to agree with what tbittner said about crumb coating with chocolate frosting as well. I used chocolate fondant to make the planks and scored them with a knife to make it look like wood too. But chilling definitely helps with the carving as well. And I used the Darn Good Chocolate cake recipe from the Cake Mix Dr. (and this site) for my cake. Good luck with it!

Good luck with this!! I did mine before I discovered this website, too, so my cake was way too moist and kept falling apart! I had to use gallons of icing to hold it together! lol You can see in my avatar it looks more like a barge! icon_lol.gif

I've done about 3 pirate ship cakes and they are all in my gallery. The first one I did was for my oldest son's 5th birthday and to get a really good "wood" effect, I used brown mmf. I rolled it out and cut it in strips like wood. Then I took a toothpick and made lines through it like wood grain and place the pieces on the ship. When the entire ship was covered, I painted over the entire cake with brown coloring and vodka. The coloring seeps into the markings from the toothpick giving a great wood effect. Also, tootsie rolls make great rails. And on one cake i made a parrot out of a starburst candy. Good luck and don't forget to post a pic.

I built a cake last week and used boxed pound cake mix by itself and mixed with another boxed mix. They held up beautifully. For the cakes, I used a half soccer ball on the base, topped by a wonder pan, topped by a sports ball pan for the head. I used straws to hold the head halves together and two dowels through the head to the cake board. It carved beautifully and stayed rock solid through a 30 mile delivery ride through rushhour traffic.
