For buttercream? I used a small tip with black icing and outlined my "design". Then I piped blobs (just a bag and coupler, no tip) of different colors onto the design. Let it sit a few minutes (maybe 10 or so), then smooshed the blobs down with my fingers to flatten and make them cover the whole cake. You can always go back in and fill in where you need to.

Actually, you could probably just pipe on the blobs and not outline, but it kept me on track better.

There is one in my photos.

I did the same as Tiffysma. I didn't outline it, but just mixed the colors and 'splotched' them on the cake randomly, the very gently smoothed it all together.
That was one of the unfortunate cakes that I forgot to take a pic of.

I did one quite a long time ago where I tried piping the design on. Then DH told me it looked like a map of a golf course. So I aggravatedly took my hot knife and ran it down the side. This is what I ended up with. It actually looked kinda neat. So I just did the remaining three sides by squirting random patterns of color on the side and then repeated running the hot knife through it. I did it again later on another cake and got the same results. Both clients were happy. Let me also say that it was quick and easy as well!

I did one in fondant - just colored three or four different colors, put little blobs on a silpat, and rolled it out. It came out pretty well.

I usually take a larger coupler, like others have mentioned. I pipe the outline of the color I am using and fill in with same tip, then I move on to the next color. I let it sit for 20-30 min and them smooth the cake using a Viva paper towel. Works like a dream. You can see my version in my pics. Ignore the writing, I had to do it quickly for my bosses son.
