I was asked to make a wedding cake to match the bride's dress. Her dress is red & teal-ish...turquoise. (It's a Pakistani/Indian wedding)

She showed me this picture (I don't know where she got it from) and wanted that particular design with the icing starting on the top and going down the sides.

I can't visualize a cake with red & teal!! If I make the flowers red, how would I incorporate the teal? Would it look better with the brown base or the traditional white? I don't know why I can't think icon_redface.gif

I don't know where to begin icon_cry.gif

I think I would do the cake white with a ribbon that has both teal and red in it. IF you can't find one then get one that is widder and one thinner and use both on top of each other. Then do red roses with teal boarder coming down.

I am with you though. Not sure those colors look right together.

I think it could work. Can you get a picture of the dress? That might help you visualize the colors together.
I would make sure to make the colors very rich and saturated--more deep than bright. Does that make sense?
Shine would be appropriate, too--lots of luster dust.
I'm not sure white would be the best color for the base icing...I think the contrast between it and the other colors would be too stark.
Is this going to be a buttercream or a fondant cake? If fondant, you could use red fondant (buy Satin Ice precolored) to cover the cake, make the design in teal out of royal icing (easy to paint with luster dust) and make the roses in a deeper red. The ribbon could be teal, too. Fondant ribbon would be even better!
Let us know what you decide to do and please post a picture of the finished cake.

BTW, when I think of the color teal in an Indian/Pakistani fabric, I think of a deep marine blue, rather than the bright, almost turquoisy color a lot of us associate with teal.
Again, getting a picture of the dress, or better yet, a fabric sample, is your best bet!

i'm attaching a picture of the color of her dress which is light blue and red. We decided to go for teal in case I do a white cake to avoid giving it the 4th of July look icon_smile.gif

Hope the picture helps

wow, that is beautiful!

You know what would look great...a red cake with the design done in gold, or even both gold and teal. I think gold would really tie the red and teal in together and add to the Indian feel.

I think this could be a spectacular cake!

She wants a buttercream cake. Do you think adding a brown base would be too much?

HollyPJ, I know what kind of Pakistani fabric teal you mean. That's what we had in mind. Deep colors are a good idea.

I'm using deep red roses for sure! Can I use luster dust on royal icing? I've used it on fondant before.

ooo! ooo! ooo!

Or what about alternating the colors of the tiers, doing two in teal and two in red, with the design done in gold...

I'm getting carried away here. icon_smile.gif

I'm glad you're giving me so many ideas!!! It's really helping! I'm really like the idea of gold. It's only a three tiered cake though. It's a really small wedding.

Red buttercream is a pain, I hear...too bad.

Yes, you can absolutely use luster on royal icing. Just let the icing dry and paint it on.

I think the brown base could work as long as it's not a dark brown. Maybe do a small test cake and see how it looks. Definitely avoid the white. I think it would be really hard to avoid the American flag look no matter what color of blue you use.

I can imagine everyone with red mouths and tongues from the red buttercream lol.

This definitely got the ball rolling. Thank you so much for your ideas.

I'll upload the picture once I'm done. Hope it turns out good! I'm off to bed...it's almost 3 am!

If it helps, that cake design is from Mich Turner's 'Spectacular Cakes', I know because I did it myself in ivory and sage!

I think those colours in the dress are beautiful - what about using the gold as as a base (as in your original picture) colour for the buttercream, with red ribbons & roses and teal piping work? I agree that using white might give it the 4th July look!

I just saw this great cake:

As you can see, it has red and teal in it, and even has an Indian feel!

The white works on it, I think, but only because it's more of an accent color and because the gold tied everything together.

I just thought you might like to see a cake where that color combo works well.

That cake is beautiful. And it has all the colors I was looking for! That picture helped me visualize the color combination together.

If the base is buttercream, is it possible to make it gold by covering with luster dust?

(By the way, what's the difference between pearl dust and luster dust?)
