I just bought some of the luster dust that everyone raves about so much here.

I'm making a grad cap and diploma in white fondant and I dusted it with the pearl luster dust and from some angles it looks absolutely awesome, but from others its really blotchy. Is there any way to even it out? Should I have painted it on instead of dusting it?

Has anyone else had problems with the luster dust looking blotchy?

I noticed that my luster dust looked blotchy when I tried to paint it on with anything wet. I gave up and started dry brushing it on with an artists brush and had fabulous results! icon_smile.gif

I am thinking the same thing. If your gumpaste piece was not completely dry the softer area's will be blotchy when you dust with any dusts. Or if you rub the dry dust in with the brush you may sometimes add more in one area than another. Not sure if you are saying it went on blotchy when you mixed the dust with alcohol, if that is the case it might have been the consistency of the mixture, too thick and it will look globby, too thin and it will looked streaked.

If you are mixing with vodka or gin, switch to lemon extract. The oil difuses the dust a little better than straight alcohol.

I did a dry dusting, but I did it right after I formed the piece, so I'm sure it was still moist. Maybe I'll try dusting it again now that its dry.

We'll see, I'm not too terribly worried, I was just wondering if there was an easy way to solve the blotchiness or if it was normal.

I haven't tried mixing it with a liquid yet, but I'll remember the lemon extract tip. Thanks!
