Wow ... what a night we had last night...

I was at work all day & left kids with DH (as usual). Tom (my baby) had a cold which had started a day or so ago - usual way sniffles & a cough. Well hubby rang later in the morning saying that he really wasn't well and they were staying home (usually go visit the inlaws on their farm). Anyways... unlike his usual self, Tom went and had a sleep for 3hrs in the middle of the day... when I got home he was breathing really strangely - making a grunt with each breath. I rang the health direct hotline (freecall for medical advice in Aust) as I didnt want to take him to the GPs after hours for a simple cold... Anyways, they heard him over the phone (after I described his symptoms) and they said to get him to the hospital ASAP.

We got down to emergency - and unlike the usual 2hr + wait were whisked straight through to have him checked over by the RN and then with a doc -- ends up being asthma... he had to have some steroid drugs & ventolin every 20 minutes... and then every 4hrs during the night. They released us so we didnt have to stay in overnight, which was good, but it's pretty scary -- I kept on checking on him during the night just to make sure he was ok... We got back from the hospital at about 9pm and I had to start on the R2D2 cake in my pics for my nephews bday which was this morning... hence it looking as sad as it does! -- too much of a rush job - I don't work well at 11pm at night when it comes to cake decorating!

Anyways.. just wondering if anyone else out there has kids with asthma and how bad is it? does it only happen when they have colds/flu etc or does this mean he will have asthma from this point on?? I'll be taking him to his GP tomorrow (if we can get in to see her) and I suppose they will do tests etc... but until then I get to speculate!!

Thanks for listening/reading...

Two of my kids had asthma...one infantile, one that has continued. It's very common for colds or high allergen times to set it off. My daughter outgrew it fairly quickly....my son did not.
I'm sorry, and I hate it that your family is having to deal with this, because any breathing problems are very frightening, but you will learn to deal with this if you have to.
You'll learn to be very "in tune" with the first signs and sounds of asthma kicking in, and will treat it. So, hopefully you won't have those trips to the ER and looonnnnngggg nights not getting any sleep. When my son was as small as yours, we bought a nebulizer, so we could give him breathing treatments. The effects were almost instantaneous and there weren't as many side effects as with the liquid medications.
I wish all the best of luck. Please know, as scary as this is, that your son will be fine. You'll be able to deal with it and, with luck, he'll outgrow it!

Hey Jodie

Thanks for that... hopefully this will turn out to be infantile asthma like you're daughter... mothers do tend to be in tune with their kids as I know I'm the first to wake at the slightest cough or stirrings during the night that either of them have... hopefully I can get in with the GP tomorrow and see how we go...

thanks again - I know i'm not the only one out there dealing with stuff like this, and it's good to hear "happy ending" stories like yours...
