Hey everybody.
I just finished my second ever wedding cake. (My PC wont post pictures, really irritating me!) It turned out really well, but the problem was that the bride asked for cake for 300 (the number of invited guests) and about 80 people showed up. there was a LOT of leftover cake. Is there some sort of rule of thumb to offer brides as far as estimated number of needed servings? i.e. 75 percent of the invited guests, or something like that.
Thanks

Wow..the bride must not be that popular...Kidding!! but seriously..did she not know how many people were attending by her replies!! Would like to see your picture!! I bet it was spectacular!!
I usually don't contract brides until their invitations have been mailed. That way they know how many they're inviting, and I recommend guest list plus 10%, especially if there will be kids at the wedding. I haven't met a bride yet who has qualms about having extra cake. Although to go from 300 to 80 might be a bit problematic!...I always recommend to have too much rather than not enough. What if you estimated 75% of invited guests, and 100% showed up (I know - when has that EVER happened!) That might make the bride - or her family - look like they hadn't planned.
I don't think there is anything that you could have done about this. We were in a similar boat at our wedding cuz our reception was an open house type reception. Most members of our church don't have formal receptions - which I hate - and so people just came if they wanted to come. Needless to say, I was highly annoyed.
