i want to dust some red fondant with sparkle dust but dont want to use rainbow or a white one because it seems like it would lighten the color of the fondant. i saw some red red sparkly stuff on a pair of dorothys shoes (wizard of oz) on a cake recently and thought it was amazing. so red, so sparkly- it didnt look like luster, it definately had the sparkle dust (pixie, disco whatever...) quality . anyway, if you know what it is called and where to get it i would appreciate it -

Here is a few links to pictures with the red slippers. Some mentioned using red cake sparkles for it. If any of these are what you are looking for, you could PM the person who did it to find out how they got that look=) HTH some, Jen

How about using red coloured sugar or I have used "cake sparkles" in red as well. They are flakes of coloured sugar that are very sparkley. I think they are made by CK. icon_biggrin.gif

i don't know if this would work, but the first thing i thought of was to dye sugar with red food color.

You can buy coarse sugar in multiple colors at cake decorating stores OR, Wilton makes a red sparkle dust.

I have not seen red Sparkle Dust, but there is red luster dust and red pixie/disco dust. The pixie dust are just like real glitter so you get that super sparkle!! thumbs_up.gif I always mix luster dusts with the pixie dusts of the same color so that I can have the base sheen of the luster dust and then the extra sparkle of the pixie dust.

Wilton has cake sparkles or shimmer dust, but not a true sparkle dust. Ah, but they have new pearl dusts (which look more like luster dusts to me).

I just went through all my dusts and I have a Apple Red Mystical dust. Maybe you can find some of that. The owner of my local party store gave it to me it was his last one. He doesn't carry that color anymore but maybe someone else does.

thank you everyone for your links and suggestions. i had seen the blue rouge here on cc, but it just doesnt look RED red to me. everytime i order a dust with red in the name, it arrives looking hot pink or brick red etc... i appreciate the suggestion of the colored sugars and wiltons shimmer dust, but i was looking for some serious shine...so....AGAGNIER, THANK YOU FOR THE LINK! that is EXACTLY what i was hoping to find- thank you!!! i hope the shipping isnt high, because i really want that color for a project next week.

There's red "mystic dust" that I get from a local cake decorating shop. It's the best for making Dorothy's ruby slippers! icon_biggrin.gif

thanks- unfortunately for me the closest "real" cake supply store is about 40 miles away- so doing the math, i am basically spending over an hour driving and buying gas- ugh. i cant find anything similar anywhere online. i may gulp down this huge lump in my throat and order it anyway. geesh, for two grams! yikes

I know it's not like the one you want, but did you ever consider using the wilton red edible glitter on wet red fondant? Of course, I'm thinking about this being done for Dorothy's slippers and am not sure if that's what you are using it for. But all that being said, I think that delivers lots of shimmer and wow and you can find it at Hobby Lobby, Michael's or sometimes even at Wal-mart. I know it's not exactly what your heart desires, but it sure is a less expensive alternative. Hope I helped a little bit icon_smile.gif

Melysa-
I have red sparkle dust (or edible glitter) from CK products. You cant get much redder than what it is. Just used it on some cookies the other day, and it turned out great. Its a bit heavier (more corse) than I like it, so my cake teacher had a suggestion that seems to work. If the flakes are too large, put into a ziplock bag and hit it with a few rolls of the rolling pin. I think a food processor would just destroy it too much and you would lose all the sparkle! I buy the edible glitter in just about every color they make whenever I can get my hands on some. People seem to be so impressed by a little sparkle!

thanks lyndabob and suzmazza, but (sigh) i do need an extra fine actual glitter or dust- it is for dusting some very very small details (small red cross symbols on top of mini cakes) that i am afraid would just take away from the intriquite-ness that i am trying to portray. the "leftovers" after this project would most likely be used on red fondant pearls- i had just used the dorothy slipper as an example for that red red- ruby sparkly red- look. thanks anyhow. i suppose i have charged ample enough for this project that an extra $10 taken from the budget isnt the end of the world. hopefully the little extra pizazz will mean more future orders- i will just have to look at it that way!
