What the heck is a Protector Flap? icon_confused.gif

I am so happy to have finally gotten the Wilton Gumpaste Flower Kit!!! icon_lol.gif I used my 40% off internet coupon for Hobby Lobby and got it for $12.

I have a striped cake with daisies to do next week, and three full sheet cakes to do for churches due to confirmation and graduation. I will be playing with flowers all night.

Its your practice board. The protective flap is the piece of plastic you lift up to slid the practice sheets under. icon_smile.gif

Okay, I saw those in class... I didn't have one, but the other students used them when piping swags and such. How can it help with gumpaste flowers?

When you cut out your gumpaste pieces, you can lay them under this flap to keep them from drying out until you need to shape and assemble them. Works for fondant pieces, too.

I just had my first gumpaste flowers class this past week! It's so much fun!

I just bought that kit too, took me forever to figure out what those 2 white things were, I think I figured out they hold your book while you are making the flowers....lol
And I didn't know what that yellow board was for either...thanks icon_smile.gif

I must admit, I ws thrilled about the book holder. Although it took me a while to get it pushed together. I hope it holds my recipe sheets for the actual cakes too. icon_smile.gif

Man, my husband was right about the placing the pieces under the sheet to keep them from drying out icon_rolleyes.gif ...In the book, it talks about placing them under a drinking glass. I always kept them in a ziplock bag between my knees, (my instructor said the heat of your thighs is the perfect temperature for molding flowers). icon_lol.gif

I haven't taken the acutal gumpaste class, but I worked with half MMF/half gumpaste in Course 3. See roses below...not bad for a first try if I do say so myself. icon_rolleyes.gif

I think I will try just gumpaste tonight and see which I like better. It might be the MMF worked better with the heat of my thighs. Man that stuff gets better everytime I think about it. icon_surprised.gif I sat with a small cookie sheet on the arm of the sofa with all my glue, and tools and a ziplock bag of the dough in my lap. It was very relaxing, and I am looking forward to trying other flowers. I just want to be in the zone, after the kids are asleep.

Maureen, we did some daisies (minus the centers), rose bases, carnation bases, calla lily bases, and some lily shells. In class 2, we will continue with the roses and lilies, and I think we're doing tulips, too, and I'm not sure what other flowers. I'm not sure about Week 3, other that that's when we bring royal icing for all the centers and details that require RI, and week 4 we do all the detail and finishing work, and assemble a final project.

This is a Wilton class, but my instructor has learned other (better?) methods for some of the flowers, so she is very generously teaching us those methods also.

Let me know what you do in your first class!
