I would love to start a home based baking business and need some advice. What I've learned so far is that in PA you can bake from home as long as the final product does not require refridgeration. Anyone have any experience with this? I'd love some advice on getting started. I do have an unfinished basement that I'd like to eventually turn into a bakery, I am just concerned with start up costs. Thanks for any help you may give!

Hi Im from PA too, but you have to have a separate kitchen, no dogs, at all or kids while anything is in progress, if you havent noticed already PA is a very particular state, so make sure you contact your local fda, maybe even sign up as a small business, it could help...best of luck!!!

I believe whether or not you have to have a separate kitchen varies by county. Contact your county's heath department or department of agriculture. thumbs_up.gif

I know where I am you don't have to have a seperate kitchen. You just can't make anything that needs refridgeration. And pets are a no-no, which is why I haven't started a business. Call the PA department of agriculture - they were very helpful. You also need to call your township to see if they allow home based businesses. If they do, you will get inspected by the department of agriculture. You have to call the fictitous (sp?) name department to register your name and get a tax ID number. You can't have anything stored on the floor and you need to keep your business items (supplies, ingredients, etc) seperate from your home items. I have done all my homework, as you can tell. I jsut can't convince DH to get rid of the dog, so I will wait a year or four for natural selection to take over icon_smile.gif. I'm horrible. HTH
