I have my first wedding cake in two weeks - 16-12-8-6 - and I'm wondering what size / how many dowels to use in the bottom layer? I've never made a 4 tier cake before and wondering if i need thicker diameter dowels to support all that weight?

Try the Wilton white plastic hollow dowels. I used them on my last 4-tier, and I really liked how stable they seemed; plus, it took less of them and they cut easily with a serrated knife, and I like the cleanness of white plastic.

I used them on the lower tiers, then used wooden dowels in the upper tiers. Can't remember how many I used of the plastic, but my base cake was 15" and I probably stuck 6 of them in there. It was really stable.

Thanks homecook! If they're hollow, are they larger than regular dowels? I've never seen them. Sounds like a great idea! I'm starting to get very nervous!
