How Can I Make This Flower?
Decorating By angelas2babies Updated 27 May 2006 , 6:13pm by fearlessbaker
I am going to attempt a cake for my course III final with lily pads and little fondant froggies...And I want to make these water lily flowers. I'm not quite sure how, though. Should I use cutters and try gumpaste or fondant?...or should I try royal icing? Any tips would be great.
Thank you all!!!

I'll have to check if any of the cutters will work. I'm hoping that I can get them to dry pointed upwards. Thanks for your response.

How can I do that? It's a good idea, but how does it work?
Any thoughts on how to create the color variation? I love how the petals blend from pink to white. I feel like a need to take an art class!!! I've read about using non-toxic chalk.

You could also do these with your largest lilly nail. Use the thinnest/cheapest foil you can find.(works best for this) You could use the smallest leaf tip you have and simply pipe each petal and use the stamens that you probably got in your course 3 kit for the centers. I like to use luster dusts because you can simply dip your paint brush in it and shade/paint away. Use royal icing and give the flowers a day or 2 to dry before taking them out of the foil. I use egg crates to dry them. Hope this helps and post your pic when done as it sounds like it will be beautiful!!!!!!
That was my first thought...to use the lily nail for the center part...I will have to mess around with some ideas and see what works. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm really excited about this cake.

Take a look at the bottom of the first page in this forum at "How do I make water lilies?" by imakecakes. I posted the instructions for how to pipe these yesterday and someone else added a link for how to do them using gumpaste or fondant. The link is wonderful, and hopefully my directions are clear enough so that you will have two good options.
Thank you everyone! I'll post pictures of my attempts.
