I am making a cake for my daugher's b-day. I am making a two tiered cake the bottome tier is a 12 inch and the top is an 8 inch however I have no dowels...is it possible for me to just stack the cakes with out dowels?

Next: I need t o know how to make that tool on this site for the faux fondant...I can't enlarge the picture and I cant tell how you are supposed to cut the bottle? Anyone?

Last thing, I am using Lorann Vanilla Butternut to flavor my buttercream icing...it looks llik an it may change the color of the frosting but I am coloring it pink anyway, so will it matter?

thanks!

I wouldn't suggest stacking cakes that size without some sort of support. Can you go to the store and get dowels or something....You might get away with it if they are only 1 layer each.As for the flavoring..if you are coloring the BC it shouldn't matter that it is a bit brown. You only need a little of those flavorings anyway!!

NO, adding the flaroring really wont make a difference if you are coloring it pink.

i do believe that tool is just from plastic bottle of pop. Just cut it where the edge curves.

You really need to support the cake. If it was a 6 you could probably risk it but I dont recommend an 8. So you have any straws. You could use those. I would use at least 8 of them and they will work fine.

1. You can use bamboo skewers--I have in the past---or sturdy straws in place of dowels since the top cake is small.
2. I don't know the answer to your second question.
3. dark vanilla may change the color of the buttercream but since you are coloring the buttercream and adding a small amount of buttercream, I don't think it will alter the color much.

Hope this helps!!

You will need to measure by sticking it down into the centre of the 12 inch cake...pull it out and have your hubby cut it off where the icing ends. You should repeat the process having about 8 dowels in the centre of the cake so when you put the 8 inch ontop ..it will be sturdy.

But won't the dowels then stick into the cake above?

No because if they are cut off where the icing is or slightly lower the dowels will end up just below the icing so you won't see them.It acts as pillars to hold up the weight.

The cardboard from your top layer will rest on the dowels of your bottom layer. Your top layer should be sitting on its own round cake board or cardboard that will rest on the bottom layer.

Good luck!!

Yes..Each cake should be on it's own board roughly the same size as the cake so there is minimal overhang..just enough for a border.

What do you mean??At the and of every girl cake I do I blow edible glitter on the cake but not the wilton glitter it is to flaky..I mean fine glitter like craft glitter which is non-toxic.It is very pretty. You could use edible pearls for a border etc..Whatever comes to mind!!

What type of cake do you have in mind for your daughter?
