How Do I Cover A Ball Cake In Fondant??

Sheri,
It will show up as a new topic each time someone posts a reply to it. I have not covered a very large ball shape, but did do a witches cauldron. I lightly iced in buttercream as smoothly as I could, chilled the cake well and then rolled the fondant so it is quite a bit larger than the ball, give yourself excess to work with, you will cut it off later. I slightly elevated my cake on the work surface (cake on a covered cake board) laid the rolled paste over the top of the ball and pulled the excess out as far away from the sides as possible without tearing the fondant, put one hand underneath the excess at the outside edge and kind of lifted it up from the surface a bit, then began smoothing the outside with the palm of your hand from the top all the way down and tuck it in a bit at the bottom, under the cake. Do this all the way around until you get to the last section, then cut away your excess fondant with a plain pastry cutter or pizza cutter. Now smooth the cake with a fondant smoother and go back and make sure the bottom sections are all neatly tucked under the cake. I really think pulling the fondant out from the sides and lifting a bit as you smooth helps so much to avoid folds or pleats in the surface.
Very carefully....
No, seriously, I've only managed to do it successfully once, and I froze the ball to make it easier to work with. Then pretty much as Shirley described. Good Luck!!!
Its easier than you think! I did a soccer ball this week...look in my pics...the soccer ball cake...I kept my mmf really greased up with crisco and just kept pulling it down and smoothing with my hand, pushing out all the wrinkles....it takes a while but ya gotta be patient... ![]()

WOW! I hope I can get a bowl to look HALF that good. You did an awesome job on the ball.
