I saw a pic on here, looked like they baked a cake in clay flower pot, is this food safe? any tricks you have to do before you put batter in?
Thanks
Hi TastersDelight check out my photo's and I have one there. According to Martha Stewart they are food safe. I got mine at Michaels, so maybe they are different than say the kind you would get at a gardeners store. You have to wash them first in hot water, then coat the inside with oil, cut a wax paper circle for bottom (to cover the hole) oil that as well then bake for about 30-40 minutes depending on the size you use. Good luck, they were fun and a hit!

I've never baked in a clay flower pot, but I would say that if they are food safe, then you'd still need to put parchment paper all around the inside to ensure your cake wont stick. The surfaces are quite porous and if you dont use parchment paper, you'll have trouble getting your cake out.
cheers

Okay I'll try this again, I keep getting booted off the site! After I oiled the pots, I didted them with cocoa powder. The kids ate them with a spoon, but while I was "tasting" my DD's it came out pretty easliy.
Oh cool
that's good to know
thanks

Thanks! I think i'm gonna try them next week.
I've cooked in a clay pot before. I just put a piece of foil folded up in the hole to keep the cake mix in. As was said, wash before use. I used my regular homemade cake release and had no problems with it sticking at all. ![]()
I have cooked many times in clay flower pots.
I mainly bake fruit cakes in them. All different sizes from tiny ones to about a 4" diameter size.
You need to make sure that they are not glazed pots.
Wash them in soapy water, as previously stated, dry well. Before use oil the inside and cut a small parchment paper circle for the base to prevent leakage.
Line them with parchment paper, which will adhere to the oiled surface of the inside of the pot.
I place my pots on a tray in the oven because the oil tends to leak out of the base even when its lined.
They retain the heat well and once the cakes are cooled remove them and place on a cooling rack.
Wash and dry the pots which can be used over and over.
Make sure the pot says made in the USA so you wont have to worry about lead. I just baked a cake in a clay pot a couple days ago. Wash it with soap and water and rinse. Let it soak in clean water for about 30 minutes and dry it well with a towel. Line the pot (inculding the bottom) with parchment paper. Then spray it with Pam. Fill it only about half to 3/4 full. Bake on a cookie sheet for 30 - 35 minutes. Mine came out great and it was very moist.
