Fondant And Gumpast: What's The Diff?
Decorating By laurakelly2 Updated 4 May 2007 , 3:46pm by step0nmi
Call me crazy but, I've never worked with gumpaste...I've always used fondant. What is the difference? And, which is better for what? I also don't know what MMF stands for lol
I'm not sure on the difference, am wondering myself, but MMF stands for marshmallow fondant.
Hope this helps.
Using the right medium for the job
Straight Fondant
Used for covering the cake and making cut-outs, appliqués etc.
Will stay soft for the longest time
50/50 Fondant and Gum Paste blend
Used when more body is needed
Used for draping and swags because it will hold its shape without stretching better than
fondant alone
Sets up faster and firmer than fondant alone
Can be used for some flowers with minimal ruffles
Straight Gum Paste (to avoid confusion, we will refer to gum paste that has been colored
with fondant as straight gum paste)
Used for flowers and other applications when you want to be able to roll it very thin and
have it dry quickly and completely
Used for most flowers especially those that require a lot of ruffling, like orchids
I always use fondant too! I feel it is easier to work with. And last night I added some Americolor to gumpaste (first time ever done this) and my gumpaste was soo sticky.
I did add some powdered sugar to it and greased my hands but, I didn't know what I did. I let it sit a little while and it did become more workable. But, I wanted to make really thin snakes for these headphones I am making and I CAN NOT do it!! The gumpaste seemed to always be bouncing back! What is that? What am I doing wrong? I am about to go out and buy fondant again!
