I am making a Bob the Builder, let's rephrase that, I am HOPING to make a BTB tool box cake for my son's birthday this Sunday. How do I make the box look "open"? I want to fill the inside with his favorite candies. I have seen a few cakes on here that look like the box lid is "open"!

Any help would be so much appreciated!!!!!!!!! I have to start making the cake tomorrow!!! Sorry for posting about it so late!

In one of my cake classes we made an open basket and used a piece of cardboard for the lid covered in icing. Worked fine.

Holy Cow!!! This has been up here all day and only one reply! You gotta be kidding me! I know we have more experts on here than just one!!!!

Okay, the cardboard idea is great but now how do I "prop it up"? Do I lay the "lid" on top of the candy filled toolbox? This will be my first cake like this so I want to get it right especially because it's for my boy's birthday and will be under the scrutiny of my family!!!!!!!

Well how about using lollipopsticks to prop it open? If the lid isn't too heavy that should work, or just use wooden skewers that go right down to the board at an angle, you can always cover them with some icing

Skewers, that's a great idea. I've got some already, I also have lollipop sticks....hmmmmmmm!!! Which to use, which to use!

That just might work! Thanks!!!!!! icon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gifthumbs_up.gif

there is a pic of a jewlery box cake in one of the mags that my MIL gets at her house...don't remember which one, woman's day or something like that, but there is a cute cake(not the box, but a waterslide i think) on the front of it if you want to look for it at the news stand. it was graham crackers held together with melted chocloate, but i don't remember if they said how it was propped up.

good luck

How funny, I just saw that magazine at Safeway tonight. I had to go buy marshmallows for the fondant and I saw that magazine and thought "That's cool" I don't remember the magazine, I think it might have been Family Circle. It was yellow! I can't wait to try this out!

Thanks everyone!

Okay, I'm really gonna do this now. I just took the cake out of the oven, I made the MMF earlier this afternoon and I just finished painting with Nu Silver/Vodka the handle, and hinges for the tool box. I REALLY LOVE how the paint job turned out! First time I've done that. I heard everyone on here give advice as to how to do it with the luster dusts and I LOVE IT!!!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif Now let's hope the cake turns out like I envision in my head!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!!!
