Cake Decorating Business. I know some of you work from your homes and other from bakeries. I am moving to a small town and trying to decide whether I should start from home then move into a bakery at a later date. Also I was wondering if anyone had a sample business plan they have created and would not mind sharing. If you are working out of your home where can I find information about the do's and don'ts for a home based cake decorating business.
Thank you in advance for any feedback or comments. Everyone on this site is awesome and I really am addicted to this site. Maybe we should start a Bakers Therapy Group.
I've just barely started taking orders, so I can't help you on that aspect, but the laws vary widely from state to state and even different areas of the same state. To get information about where you're moving to, it would be very helpful if you post the new location.
Laura.
I personally chose to work from home to be my own boss, be able to work when I want, be able to be with my kids. So when I get an order, I can work when the kids are at school, or after they're asleep. Besides, my town already has a bakery and another one would be too much. I do only cake decorating and in a little town like ours, a bakery needs to make more pastries and lots of different things to be able to survive. Also clients can call me anytime, day, evenings, weekends, they don't have to worry about closing times.
Have fun with your decorating!!!

I work from home for now. I'm doing this to be with my kids. My business plan is to move to a bakery after they start school. I'm figuring about 6-8 yrs from now. I'll also have more clients established as well.
I am also moving to a different city but in the same state. I agree with the previous poster. You need to find out what laws are in your state. Some states if you work out of your home, you don't have to have a home inspection. I would also suggest getting in contact with an accountant to make sure you are doing everything you need to do for that end as well.
Good luck!
