I'm very new to cake decorating and wanted to ask all of you pros out there, when you were first starting, what would you practice on (piping and other techniques), a real cake or a dummy cake? I'm just wondering if it is worth investing in a set of dummy cakes (are they reusable?) Any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated!
Actually, when I first started I practiced borders and piping on a practice board with buttercream icing and just wiped it off after use. Then I graduated to the side of a cake pan. When I gained my confidence I started baking cakes and working on the real thing. I've only recently began working with cake dummies.

What I do is I practice on cakes that I bake for my own family. We're 5 in the house, and hubby needs lunches for work, so I bake a cake every two or three days. I try new pans, new techniques. And all my hubby's coworkers are jealous of his cakes, so he always has business cards to hand-out in his lunch-box, hihihi!
