What is the best way to attach fondant cutouts to a buttercream iced cake? Will buttercream hold a large cutout without some kind of support?

I have a graduation cake due tomorrow and want to put the school logo on the sides, but am afraid that they'll slide off and mess up the icing. The cake is already iced, but I haven't put any decorations on it yet.

Thanks for your advice.

I made a buttercream covered cake and attached fondant hearts to the side. They did not slide.
