I was wondering how you all keep your photos in a book for customers to view. I was using regular photo albums but they keep filling up (good thing!) and I have get more. Also I would like to write a description of the cake and when I get a new photo for that section and need to move a photo there is writing from the previous photo. I like to remove some of my old work for some newer (and better). I feel like I keep juggling photos. I also keep a smaller book for my husband to take to work. I really want a website, but I'm not licenced yet so that scares me.
Any suggestions on how to keep the photos nicely displayed, portable, and professional? Thank You all so much!!! ![]()
Sounds like I don't have as many as you, but I use a 3-ring binder with clear plastic page protectors. I can then swap pictures around as needed. If you do this, you could use one side for the pic and then put a description on the other and people could see both at the same time. Hopefully that made sense? ![]()
Edit: I should add, so maybe it'll be clearer, my husband takes pictures of my cakes and then I print out an 8"X11" color picture for my binder.
I think I'm going to do a scrapbook.
Combine my two hobbies.
My kids already have multiple albums, why not my cakes?
Thank you for your input! The binder sounds like the best idea so far.
I do a scrapbook for each type... One for baby cakes, kids birthday, religious, etc...
I have a few pic, I just print them on my own computer using photo paper, but I do write up a discription, I even try to match the theme of the cake to the scrapbook paper....if it is a sports cake I use sports paper ect...
For years I used 2 regular photo albums--a large-sized one and a small purse size that I could carry around with my business cards. This year, I was fortunate enough see the portfolio of a fellow cake decorator. She used a professional portfolio--the one you purchase at art supply stores. The photos were all basically the same size 8"x10". The portfolio was truly impressive. So much so, when I get some extra money, I'm going to give my portfolio a face-lift.
I really want a website, but I'm not licenced yet so that scares me.
Why do you think you need be licensed in order to have a website? People have photo websites all over the internet. They are just online photo-albums.
For 16 years, I used photo albums to present my work to my clients, but after all that time, and hundreds of little hands turning the pages, the albums were in very bad shape. And with 1600 (or so) cake pictures to see, needless to say, one album no longer did the trick. Additionally, my clients would have to pack up their little kids to come to my not-so-child-friendly house to look at those pictures. My teacup collection suffered a little, too.
So, a friend created a website for me, with almost all of my cake pictures, as well as pictures of all my character pans. People can sit at home, in their pajamas if they like, and look at pictures of my cakes on the internet. They can look anytime, even in the middle of the night, and they don't need to make an appointment with me. All of my cake pictures are in numerical order in a couple of boxes. When a client chooses a cake on my website, all they need to tell me is the file number and name (listed with each picture) and I know exactly which one they mean. My clients love my website. It is a win/win situation all around. ![]()
There is only an email address on my website, no other personal information. No prices. Nothing. No need to be afraid, if you are careful about what you put on any website. ![]()
I use photo albums. One is for wedding and groom's cakes. These are all in 8 X 10's. The other is for anything else. I'm thinking about adding another one for sculpted and one for tiered cakes.
I also have a small one that I made for my friend that helps with weddings (she does the flowers). So any cake pics that shows her flowers go in that one so she has an album to show both her flowers and my cakes.
Your website is awesome sugarfrosted. It is so easy to navigate, still trying to redo mine, when i find the time. Lend me your friend???
A website is a great tool, but I additionally also have a binder with some cakes, so that I can get people hooked on my types of cakes. My cards have pictures on them too. I find that especially out here, a lot of people have no idea what is doable with a cake, but they are slowly coming around
