How Do You Charge For Delivery?

I have someone who's ordered a cake and wants me to delver. It will take me about 35 minutes to get there. Do you guys charge per mile, or how? My hubby said I should charge $15, but I'm not sure if that sounds right. I would like to have it broken down in case they ask how I charge, instead of just coming up with a figure out of my head. Thanks!

Maybe you could do it this way:

This is just an example on amounts:

up to 15 miles: $5

15-30 miles: $10

30-45 $15

Obviously you could adjust the amounts & number of miles, but you get the point.

I charge a flat rate within a certain distance. $15 within 10 miles and goes up from there. With the price of gas these days, people should understand delivery charges! Also consider if you have to set up or just drop off the cake.

The standard with other deliveries and driving is aroun $.32 per mile. May be a bit more now not sure. You could always do a base charge of $15 for so many miles and then so much per mile afterward.

I would say .50 a mile.

I forgot to mention...maybe you could say either 5-10 miles is free if you are up for that, but it all depends on the traffic in your area and how long say 10 mile will actually take.

Get a map of your area (town/district/state, whatever) and a compas. Do circles around your home every few miles or so, like a dartboard. First circle is $5 delivery, 2nd circle is $10 and so on and so on...

Much easier to ask where they are, check your map and charge them for their location.

Since I don't allow people to pick up from me...I do free delivery to certain counties. I'm trying to build a "following" and I figure it is worth it. I would drive farther every day to work if I had a "real job."

I charge $1/mile. With the price of gas, I think that's fair.

I agree, gas prices have risen and people should not be surprised when they are charged a flat rate for the delivery. Don't worry about wether they think it will be too expensive to deliver because you still have a business to run despite how high gas prices get.

This may or may not help, but the lady who did my wedding cake in January charged a $30 flat fee for delivery AND setup in our city's metro area. I don't know that she would charge that much to deliver a non-tiered cake ,though.
