My BIL is a director and participant for the gay chorus and very involved, so we were thinking of using it as a theme for his birthday cake, as many of the men will be there. Can anyone think of a set-up? I would like it to look elegant and show off as much as possible, cause thats the way I am.

I'm thinking a M.H. cake with the logo on the top, musical notes scattered on the side, and a little musical score on the bottom with a Disney tune as a hidden joke to his other love. BUT I do not like that the logo will be not as visible. Any ideas?

ok...how do you feel about doing a 3-D cake???

could make a replica of the logo guy

one option: see sketch -- stacked single layers and then carve to get shape.

or .... two wonder molds, top one upside down (would lop tops off each so he doesn't have a too narrow waist)

head could be sports ball or two mini-balls have stuck together
(and for extra fun -- could do head w/ edible image of the b-day guy or try to make a fondant replica)

"arms" could be gumpaste with wire inside for support and balls of gumpaste at end for hands -- or just round flat cut-outs for the hands.

could do BC base coat that could be combed on the front to get ridges that look like pleats of tux shirt.

then partial layer of black fondant to create the tux jacket (would cover all but the front shirt area)

then add buttons and bow tie

and dowel it just like and stacked tier cake (one cakeboard every 4 layers and under the head -- with internal dowels and one long dowel through the whole thing.

give a few minutes...and it'll be there.

something to do w/ the way the servers handle storing photos.

----------

and on those arms ... was thinking along the lines of all those stars and doo-dads that are on wires sticking out of curved cakes.

There it is! Thanks. Sounds like a great idea and I'm gonna do it!
Just a question, I've never worked with gumpaste before, is it pretty easy? Can I teach it to myself with a video/book? Something I can get down in two weeks?

think of gumpaste as:

a "version" of fondant that:

can be rolled LOTS thinner

dries LOTS faster (as in can dry in just hours or even minutes if really thin)

dries VERY hard

so easier to get shape if can work in a hurry and don't have to worry so much about sagging, etc. as it dries.

can use fondant instead if more comfortable with that

Ok, I lied. I gotta ask a couple more questions. It'll be my first big 3D cake thats not smaller layers on bigger ones. icon_smile.gif

I plan on using the wondermold, with a rice crispy head, and Pettinice or MMF fondant.

Would I use a filling? Where would I put it? Would WASC be firm to support this build? What recipe do you recommend if not? How would I stack the molds on top of each other without falling?

TIA

with wondermold, personally, I wouldn't risk it in the top upside down one...only in the bottom one and even then leery of doing it.

Haven't made WASC yet (I know...get w/ the drill and make it! -- just too much a fan of CHOCOLATE!) --

the durable cake recipe should do the trick:

lop off the tops (say about the top 1/4 or so) to get flat surfaces.
then run a dowel through both (or even 3 or so skewers). use a really stiff icing at the joint. I'd also stick a cakeboard there and support it w/ dowels.

Edted to say I posted this before I noticed the photo. Oh, that is the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus? I love their music, have several of their CDs. And I am a supporter of their chorus as well as San Francisco''s. And I have two good friends who sing with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. I would LOVE to do this cake! I have been a volunteer of the Rainbow Community Center in Concord for 10 years and have been on the board of directors for 3 years. My 19 year old granddaughter Sabrina is Lesbian. One of the sweetest children ever, Grandma's are not supposed to play favorites, but if I were allowed, it would have to be our "Beanie."

How about an edible image of the cover of one of their CDs, mounted on a gumpaste plaque. You can buy chocolate transfer sheets wth black music notes. It would be pretty cool to do a white chocolate wrap with the black music notes. And maybe a small Mickey in his Sorcerers Apprentice robe and hat with a music baton in his hand? Whatever you decide to do, please post a photo, I am anxious to see it.

To use a favorite comment of my gay friends "Fabulous!!!"

Wow, thanks so much everyone! Yeah, he looked like a chess piece until his arms and tux were on. All the guys loved it, though some had to have it explained to them. Some people who weren't in the chorus understood what it was before some of the guys did.
