Okay I need some serious help, my daughter's 4th birthday is Saturday and her theme is princess. I was thinking of making a two tiered cake, I got the americolor pink and purple colors along with some edible glitter, edible pearls etc... now...the only problem is I've never made a two tiered cake before! LOL... so I need some ideas, tips, instructions etc... I need to know how to make butter cream icing, and I also want to make the cake from scratch so I need to know what a good flavor/recipe for that would be. I just want the cake to come out pretty, girlie and well...princessy! I have a tiara to set on the top when it's finished. Any help would be SO greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I've got a couple of cakes with tiaras in my gallery. I use the Wilton buttercream recipe..not for any special reason other than its the only one I've ever used! I keep wanting to try a new one.
If you're going to do 2 tier with like an 8" and a 6", make sure you run some dowels into the 8" to support the 6" and then a big dowel down through the whole cake after its assembled.
As far as a cake from scratch, I can't help you there. I use only mixes now. I tried several scratch cakes and they bombed, so I gave up. I know my mixes are going to be consistenly good.
have fun!

The Stacked Construction article on CC has really good step-by-step instructions and pictures. I would check that out first. I have had the best luck with the Wilton buttercream icing for stacking purposes, just because it seems to be more stable. I haven't found a 50/50 butter/shortening or all butter recipe that has a consistency that I like.
The easiest way i've done a 2 tiered cake is to make dowel rods about 1 to 1 1/2 inches taller than the base cake and put your top tier on top of the dowels. You don't need a board or anything with such a small cake. There's a castle cake on the wilton website that's cute for a princess cake. Hope this helps.
