I was wondering if anyone knows anything about donating cakes to places. I would like to get some more practicing in but I thougth it would be nice if I donated the cakes to other places besides my husbands job. I was thinking about hospitals, senior homes and maybe even churches that feed the poor. I was thinking about calling around and asking but I thought I would ask here first. Do you think it would be a bad thing to do is donate them? I really need more practice. Thanks Megan

I donate every chance I get..........church bake sales, events at my children's school, etc. I have received the best response from the church events I donate to.........How about Teacher Appreciation Day next Tuesday? If you have children or granchildren in school.........that could an opportunity.

I have donated cakes in the past. Here is a bit of advice though. Nursing homes and hospitals cannot really use them, because the patients have dietary restrictions that are so different from person to person. The staff with end up eating it (trust me I spent my other working years/school in hospitals). I work with the youth group at our church, and we couldn't even make goodie bags for the patients. I would suggest contacting your church and finding out when they have a functions coming up, and ask if they would be interested in your skills. I'm sure they will be having baptism classes, marriage classes, bingo night, bible study, etc. and they would love to have a donated cake as a refreshment. My entire business started out this way. I made a cake for a senior mass, and the rest is history. If you have a friend thats a teacher, send them in with him/her for the faculty. My free cakes that my mom has taken into school, has gotten me a consistant level of business from just one place!!! Hope this helps and good luck!!

I've read on previous posts that some donate to the local Fire dept. or police station.

I was thinking for the hospitals more for the staff than the patients! As for the fire dept. we are part of our local vol. dept and the one time i made a cake it came home with only a 1/4 missing!

Hmm.. what about a local woman's shelter? Or a soup kitchen? Wouldn't hurt to call and see if they'd be interested in something like that. I usually take my cakes to my mom's work. She works at a clinic, with about 10 doctors offices in it. If you have one of those in your area, I'm sure the secretaries would love that.

Thats what I was thinking about. But I wasnt sure if they would be able to accept them, coming from a home based kitchen.

I have taken cakes into the schools here. They just keep them in the office or put it in the lounge, the teachers love it and it has brought in a lot of business. I think just about anyone would be happy to get free cake! I try to stay away from dr. offices just because I know the drug reps take a lot of goodies into them. Make sure to also take some business cards or contact info!

I volunteer with a group that takes meals to families whose kids are in our local hospital for cancer treatment twice a month. At least one of those times I take a cake, cupcakes or cookies for the meal. Our hospital has a "family room" on the floor where we set up the food and everyone helps themselves.

Okay I called my local "Family" that tends to people who are in need. I asked them if they would be interested in taking some practice cakes from and they said yes! I am so excited! I am doing one for monday for the employees there! I hope this will get my name out there a little more. I did tell her that I am doing these for practice adn would eventually like to start a small business! I am so excited about this! So I think you are need of practicing and would like to give your cakes away I would call your local "family"

I had the exact same theory. I called and talked to the children's church pastor. I knew they had bake sales and things in the past to raise money for camp. I made sure he knew that while I couldnt bake enough on my own for a whole bake sale, I could bake a couple each week. He suggested baking for church lunches. Our childrens' church (and youth- so there was another cake) has free lunches (or for donations only) to raise money for camp. So I provided the dessert. I even made a pie once and took it next door and knocked on the neighbor's door and asked if they like pie. I'm sure cake would be the same.

I thought if I called local churches and asked if I could donate a cake each week and they could distribute it as they saw fit, they'd think I was nuts. But you might make mention to others at your church, or if you dont go, tell family members you'll donate for good causes.
