Everytime I cover something with white fondant I end up with little "dust" or specks. The fondant is fine, I use satin ice and I check it. My hands and work surface are clean. Last night I covered a small sample cake and from start to finish I only worked with the fondant for about 5 minutes yet there are little "dust" spots. How can I avoid this?

Thanks,
Kathi

Living in a sterile air bubble would be my guess!!! I don't think you can avoid it, I have the same problem, the air around us is always full of tiny 'floaties' no matter how clean our houses/kitchens are. I think that it's just an unfortunate fact of life!

i hear you. I always seem to end up with little fibers in mine too. It is amazing how much stuff must be floating around. I really dont know how to avoid it all together, except meticulous cleaning. Even then just fibers from towels or whatnot are bound to be hanging around still.

Happens here too. No matter what I do there is always some little "floaty" that gets on there.

Maybe something you're wearing? I was rolling out fondant a while ago and got specks of lint all over it and nearly went crazy trying to figure out what I did. My mat was spotless. I washed my hands. No kids in sight. WHAT WAS GOING ON???

Well, it was my fuzzy sweater. I usually end up wearing a T-shirt now, so nothing gets near the fondant. Also, check the rolling pin and wipe it well before using. Mine is a magnet of lint.

Hope that helped.

When I use b/c or fondant I make sure I wear all white; that has helped me a lot!

Okay, so from now on I'll wear white. Any ideas how to get rid of this on my cake?

Thanks,
Kathi

I asked Colette about this in her class and she looked at me like I had two heads. Then when everyone was rolling fondant (in a chef's coat, in a sterile kitchen) we found little lintys in everyones. I called her over and showed her that's was I was talking about...she laughed and said she'd never noticed and that's why she wears glasses.

I do try to wear all white... and only wipe my hands on white towels.

I always wear white when dealing with fondant. I find that if I wear colored clothes, colored lint gets onto the fondant surface, and it's annoying when you are kneading fondant and it gets mixed in icon_sad.gif

I've found that letting my tools air dry seems to help. I also make sure that I wipe my hands and work surfaces with paper towels. Dish towel seem to be the worst linters.

Its gonna happen, no matter what...I use toothpicks to pluck them off once I'm done. thumbs_up.gif
