Hi:
I'm going to be making the cake for my daughter's First Communion and have a question regarding the weight. I want to do a rectangular not too high cake on the bottom and on top of this, place the cake in the shape of the cross and then decorate it with fondant, etc.. My question is: will the bottom cake be ok with the weight of the cross cake on top, or is there a chance it might "sink"? what can I do to prevent this. Also, do I have to cover the whole bottom cake with fondant and then place the cross shaped cake on top, and last but not least: do I cover the cross with fondant first, and then put it on top of the other one, or do I cover it with fondant after the cross is on the rectangular (how do I transfer it, if that's the option?). First time making a cake like this. Thanks for your help and for such a WONDERFUL website!!!

Hi Diana, welcome to CC!!!!
What I do when I stack my cakes is I insert plastic drinking straws in the cake to support the top cake. I measure the bottom cake and cut the straws to that size or a little longer. I insert the straws in the cake and place the top cake (iced and on a board) on top of it. To fill gap between the top cake and bottom cake, I do a star or shell border around it.
I think it would be easier if you cover each cake in fondant first then stack it.
Hope this helps....let me know if you have any questions.

PS. My daughter is doing her 1st Communion on 5/12. But for once, I'm not baking the cake
, I'm picking it up from the bakery
. I have too much other things to do (I'm doing chocolate boxes for favors) and did not want to deal with the cake. Good Luck!!!
I'd cover each separately - but a cake board cut to size under the cross - even if it is just a rectangle on the long part. Dowel beneath it and place it on the rectangle.
