Exploding Cake...help Quick

I have a customer who wants a cake similar to this (the exploding part..anyone know how to do this??? Any help would be hugely appreciated! Thanks,

Looks to me to be eithre royal icing or fondant stars stuck on the end of florist wire, and a star shaped cake. The color may have been sprayed on too. Please post when you finish yours! It is really a cool cake!

red splash: fondant or gumpaste cut into shape (looks to be a multi-pointed star 10 or 12 points or so) then each point curved and allowed to harden.

one of the florist foam rings covered in plastic wrap would be a great way to hold the curved shape while drying.

I've seen this before where the cake was actually covered in fondant twice. The top layer was then cut and the pieces pulled back to create the exploding effect.

I might have to do a little 6 in experiment cake to see what works best for me. I will post if it is not a total disaster. Thanks again guys
