I volunteered myself to make cakes for my child's school cake walk the cakes will be the prize. They will not be for sale, I need ideas on what themes to do I sortta want to make cakes that would attract kids but not too elaborate. Is 8" too big of cake I was thinking 6" cakes.

You're donating ....they're kids. Whether they are 6 or 16, a six inch cake will be fine.

4" or 6" rounds. lots of bright colors swirled together in buttercream. maybe chocolate transfers like in the whimsical bakehouse. bugs, fireflies, flowers, butterflies, animals, sportsballs...stars, things like that.

We have a cake walk at our school, and it is a big draw. The easier the better. My 4 cupcakes in a box went like crazy! I did a few brownies and a few 6 inch cakes. I would not spend too much time decorating them but make them appealing. Have fun!

I'd add sports themes for the boys! Girls love glitter and flowers and all things fancy. icon_lol.gif

Pastryjen,

a cake walk is a game that is played in school carnivals/fund raiser. I have done several down in KY and this is how it works here...

a bunch of kids are playing musical dots (like chairs) once the kid is stopped on the special dot chosen by the person running the game. The winning child gets to choose a cake as their prize. So they give away a lot of cakes very fast.

Now, I have seen this done a little differently at a school carnival in Porcupine Ontario.
They did the musical chairs (you had to pay $1.00 I think to play. They went through several rounds until the final chair was taken. The child who was in the chair got to choose a cake from the table. They raised money and did not give away as many cakes as they do here in KY. So with 20 or so really pretty cakes you can raise a bit of cash.

Here at my child's school in KY entrance is free to the school carnival and we go through 100's of cakes. Everytime the music stops some child is on the special dot.

It is a hit and kids and parents like the game a lot.

Ooops I answered the question and forgot to post my response to the original.
I would go with all 6 in cakes in a multiple of fancy colours. The smaller they are the cuter they are and if they are the same shape and all different colours your presentation will be wonderful. This way too, you will be able to donate more cakes.
You can also do it in cup cake format. Wrap 4 together and make that one of the prizes.
You can decorate those as spring flowers, creep cakes, any easy theme you want that your school is in to.
You can also buy those plastic picks and place them on cup cakes too. The kids will go for that and rings as well.
Good luck

Thanks Chiara - I'd never heard of that before. Dtr's only in JK so I don't know all that much about schools nowadays!
