I've done it after it crusted, but you have to
have a lite hand on it so you don't press through.

I have a cake in my photos (birthday cake for neighbor) that I did brush embroidery on crusted buttercream. I was pleased with the results, although I will say that the picture doesn't do the cake any justice. (Which is why I just bought a new digital camera!!)

You can do it on buttercream, but not to the extent you can do it on fondant.

For some strange reason, the Wilton site above tells you to do it with buttercream, but when taught AT Wilton, it is done with royal icing icon_confused.gif
If you do it with royal on buttercream, you risk the royal breaking down and falling off.

So, if you choose to do it on buttercream, I would recommend using buttercream. And to be honest, I don't see any reason to use water with the brush. I'd think you could just use slightly thinner buttercream icing for the embroidery outline.

Do you need to water down the bc you use to do the embrodery? Or is just dipping the paint brush in water everytime you pull the frosting enough?

I made one cake on BC last week. I was wondering about doing this before but embroidery on BC works well and I did it.
It's in my album.

Thanks

Guess What!? I asked a similar questions last night, only I was hoping to do it on whipped icing. Well it worked! There will be a pic in my photos in a few minutes. I used medium consistincy buttercream icing with piping gel and a VERY soft touch. I'm pretty happy with it. So...yes you can embroider on buttercream. I would use the same consistancy icing. GOOD LUCK![/img]
