I can't no matter what I do keep my words straight and it is driving me crazy. I have attached a photo of a cake I did this weekend for a friends daughter she wanted a drivers license cake but with just a goofy picture instead of an edible image. As you can see on the cake my words are all crooked!

Can someone please give me a simple way to keep my words straight without having to paint lines on my cakes. icon_cry.gif

ok sorry - I've tried and tried and cant upload the photo, it's in my photos. Thanks for the help

It seems you went crooked in the middle. The rest looks good. I would recommend stepping back a lot in between letters so you can see if you are going crooked. Another idea would be to use the push pin method. Print or write your message on paper, then push a push pin or needle through the letters. This leaves bumps on the back. Then gently press this on your cake. When you remove it, you will have a guide for your lettering. Hope this helps. BTW, your cake is very cute. I like the picture!

I just measure across the cake and make a tiny line in the frosting that won't show but is enough to guide my writing.

cakerlady - thanks for the help! What do you make you line with so it won't show up?

rezzycakes - thanks also for the help - I'm going to give that push pin method a try to see if I can get the hang of it and maybe I can build my confidence a little.

Thanks for the great ideas!!! icon_smile.gif

I read a tip in a book that said to lay a piece of thread on the icing to use as a guide and then just lift it off. Of course that wouldn't work for script. I've used a toothpick to make a very faint line or even dots on icing to act as a guide. My writing is always crooked on cakes too when I don't use anything to "help" me.

You can also print your words out in reverse then put wax paper on top and trace with piping gel, then lay the wax paper on the cake and lightly brush with a dry paint brush. You then lift off the wax paper and the impression is there in piping gel for you to copy over.

I use the push pin method. That way I can make the font match the cake theme.

Another great idea I learned on CC is to use a laser level. That way there is no mark on the cake

Those are all some really great ideas! I love the laser level idea also - I guess I better go check hubbys toolbox icon_lol.gif

This is why I love CC so many ideas and you can see what works best for you!

WOW--Laser level--Love that idea!!
How/where do you set or attach it? I haven't had much luck making lines that weren't visible on the cake !

I have a slant when I write too. So I just turn the cake to the side. That way I don't slant.
