Please help! I want to make a cake for a very close friend who is moving in a few weeks (Military PCS). I'm new to this whole decorating thing, but I really want this to be a SPECTACULAR cake. The man I'm making the cake for is my Husband's best friend. He is an amazing father, a loving husband, a wonderful friend, and just an all-around great guy. He's in the Navy, loves to play golf, and loves football. I don't just want this to be a basic sheetcake that says "We'll miss you." So here's my problem. I've built this up so much in my head, wanting this cake to be so amazing, that I'm completely blanking on a design idea!!! Please help! What would you do?

I made a NY yankees cape a month ago on top of a whimsical cake. Maybe that can inspire you to do one with his favorite team.

What if you didn't do a real theme maybe just a color scheme? Are you planning for a lot of people or just a few?

Probably about 40 people, but extra cake is fine, I send it home with the single Sailors.
fooby--that ball cap is AMAZING! Did you follow a tutorial, or was that totally your own vision? Can you share any tips?
I would love to do a whimsical tiered cake, I'd really like to make a "Dixie Cup" Sailor's white hat out of fondant, I'd like to incorporate golf balls, there are so many ideas swirling through my head that I can't seem to focus on any of them! lol

The tutorial on this site for whimsical cakes is great. Maybe you could do the top tier as a sailor's hat, the middle tier as a golf ball, and the bottom tier a tee for the golf ball. Or do the sailor's hat on the side of the golf ball & tee. Maybe put the Navy crest/seal/symbol (whatever you call it) on the golf ball.

Hi,

It was totally my vision for the whimsical part. I got help for the cap from MsSugarBaker. If you need any help, just PM me.

Thanks!

Can anyone tell me approximately how many people a whimsy cake with 14", 10", and 6" tiers should serve? I know I have more cake here than I need, but I'm trying to get an idea of exactly how much I have. I found a chart that said the 14" tier alone would serve 90 people--that doesn't seem right to me! Thank you for your help!

The way we eat cake in my family, all your tiers would probably feed 90! lol I think, if we have a round cake, the 12 in. usually feeds 50 of us. Hope it comes out great icon_biggrin.gif

Just another cake idea, I have seen going away cakes with edible images on them. It would be fun to do a topsy turvy with pics decorating the sides of fun times you have all had together. I'm sure his family could hook you up with pictures. Just an idea.
