Sorry a little lengthy... but I needed to vent on this!! My husband deserves so much credit!!! I love him SO much... this is wy I married him...
My GP's 50th was Sunday. I have been decorating off and on rarely over the last 10 years about since I was 13ish when I took the class. Over the last 2 months though I have been practicing and what not, realizing my flowers are out of tune so I decided to go with the simple sotas cake with the spiral seporators I saw in my Wilton book. This is my first tiered cake and my first BIG cake experience.
I started baking one cake level Thursday night and the rest Friday, filled my 16 layered cake so I didn't buldge, the Saturday I started early icing that and attempting to smooth. As always my husband sits in the kitchen and just watchs, making sure I get it all level. (he could have a million things to do and that is where he will be till I am done with the cake!) He had been watching Food Network's Cakeweek and saw Alton Brown use a drywall knife so Jake (DH) being a carpenter goes out to the shed and gets a 5" and 12" knife and washes them for me and it worked better than my Wilton knife!!! (only the 5" though)
After Icing the 16" we quickly realized I didn't have enough supplies for icing! My mom got supplies and Jake went over and got it, while he was gone I started icing the 12" torted choc cake. A soon as he got home he filled my in on my unleveledness and got the 12" drywall blade and tried to help. We got it good and we walked away to clear a spot for it to rest and looked back and the side fell off!!!! I actually tried putting tooth picks in it but it didn't work of course (the cake was a box mix unaltered and too soft and the icing BC was to thin I think, plus to keep the hight I tried to fudge it and keep some of the bevel at the top intstead of leveling... nice try.) After a huge breakdown DH again ran out to our country store who had no choc cake mix and he made me a Wilton's scratch triple recipe for my 3" pan while I decorated crying!!! This is 4 in the afternoon!!! Party is in 24 hours!!!
So I got the 16" cake done and the 12" was in the oven, we sat done to eat in the LR since the kitchen was taken and realized the 8" cake sitting on the card table in the LR had a huge chunk out of it... and it was missing!!! Hmmm... which dog was it! Thankfully it was only torted and restacked with just cakeboards awaiting its turn... which was supposed to happen while the 12" cooled!
So my loving Jake ran back to the store for the third time (yes they got a kick out the story too) for a yellow cake mix and more supplies! Then while I worked on some other decorations he made that cake. Then he started throwing ingredients together and came up with his own recipe for PB filling for the choc cake which everyone loved!! (I gotta say it was dang good)
We stayed up late till midnight, till they were all out and cooled and torted (which of course didn't go over well) and fillled to settle then we went to bed. I got up at 4 with my mind on the cakes and couldn't sleep, so up I was decorating at 4AM! If it wasn't for my husband I wouldn't have got it all done in time or survived mentally!
I of course and upset with the fact that the sides and professionally smooth, the are not completely level, and my dang balls on the sides got crocked somehow! Thankfully everyone was amazed I did it!!! And they loved it! Jake took the muttled 12 inch to work for the guys to eat, they enjoyed it.
We got there and my 18 y.o brother with a GF of 2 yrs asks if I will do his wedding cake... I just glared and said maybe!
Here is a pic of the finished product...
It looks great! All's well that ends well, right?
Now, off the computer and go spend time with your hubby! He's definitely earned it!
I am so sorry for the trouble you had, but all I can say is that it looks AWESOME. ![]()
You are lucky to have such a wonderful husband. I think your end result turned out great!!!!!
More great things are to come from you and your hubby!! I expect to see some soon. Good job to both of you. ![]()
OMG !!! Be so thankful for a helpful and supportive husband!! Cake looks GREAT!!
Well first of all, your cake looks fabulous! You should be so proud. Also, I think it's great that your husband is so supportive and willing to help out, even if that means going to the store several times in a row![]()
I usually do my cakes late at night and DH is not a night owl like me, so he is usually in bed,but if I leave a mess(which I usually do) he always cleans it up for me! Sometimes, he'll even tell me to just go to bed after finishing the cake because he will clean up for me the next day. So that definitely makes my life so much easier! Thank goodness for husbands!!
OMG!! Your husband is absolutely WONDERFUL!!!
I am also blessed with a great husband! But, yours is amazing....(mine did offer to do my last cake since I was swamped with essays for school but, I couldn't let him)
anyway...
What are you complaining about sides and not level??? After I saw the cake I was like "IT LOOKS AMAZING" Cause you were soo stressed about it! You should be extremely proud! Great cake! ![]()

What a team! That's what marriage is all about, helping each other. i think it turned out great. I know it was a pain, but now you guys have a memory you will never forget!
OMG Heather, you and Jake did a fantastic job on your first tiered cake - it looks amazing!
(Heck, it's just a beautiful cake!)
You certainly proved the adage, "no guts, no glory".
I applaud your intestinal fortitude, the outcome certainly belies all the obstacles you had to overcome.
I particularly like the little tassel-like elements of your design - just the perfect finishing touch to an elegant cake.
It looks amazing! I would have never guessed you had trouble with it.
Your cake looks awesome! It's great to have a husband that helps like that! My husband helps and has gone back to the store a couple of time (for the same event) for more cake mix, powdered sugar, etc. Yes, everyone at Von's (Safeway) knew the story of our event, too!
Congrats on the great job, and to your Grandparents on their 50th!
There is a long, exhausting, frustrating story behind every great cake. Yours is no exception. ![]()
great save the cake looks awesome, tell your husband how awesome he is, i know mine has saved by helping me patch up a cake after it decides to jump off the counter. ![]()
Thank you everyone for your support and just letting me get out my worst cake story yet! THANX!
