Has anyone noticed that the "new improved" flavours of Betty Crocker cake mixes taste and look like a cake mix? Most specifically their Chocolate Fudge and French Vanilla cakes? I called them on it and their customer service centre said they didn't change the receipe. but the boxes say otherwise. My cakes are not the same anymore, anyone else out there have the same problem? Have you been able to reproduce the original taste and flavour? The choc. fudge doesn't have that fudgey taste any more. Can anyone help?

I've never tried them before yesterday, but I made cupcakes using BC butter and chocolate fudge, and they were nasty! I gave them to about 8-10 kids who were playing in our backyard yesterday, and only 2 of them ate the cake! They all ate the icing off, then gave the cupcakes part back to me to throw away. They were about $.50 cheaper at Kroger yesterday, so I thought I'd try them. Never again! They are nasty, and will probably all be thrown away!

hmmm, i've been using BC for some time now since DH changed their recipe, but DH doesn't carry the chocolate fudge. I think i'll have to check it out and see. Looks like its back to DH and more experimenting to get it like my customers like it.

Sheesh, why do they do this kind of thing?! As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"!

I always use DH Chocolate Fudge! Maybe your store doesn't carry it?

I've used BC only for 25 years .... when was the change? I've noticed nothing.

If I have to purchase a mix I use DH. I don't like the other mixes. Hope you find something similar to what you enjoyed in the past.

You know, for a long time I would only use DH mixes - nothing else could compare. Then a few years ago, they changed - not for the better! A friend said she used only BC so I started using them, with good results. But funny enough, lately, they aren't turning out the same. There's nothing on the box that says "improved" or anything, but my dh has even noticed a change. Not as moist and tasty as usual. I was so disappointed! Now, I tried a DH recently, and it was okay, and I've even used no-name from Zehrs for a doctored cake. I was actually amazed at how good I thought the no-name mix worked out for WASC. Much cheaper than BC or DH (which I stock up on when they are on sale)

So now I'm not sure what to do - my fave BC flavour is chocolate-chocolate chip, and no other company seems to have that flavour. BTW, is there such a thing as a white chocolate cake mix in the US? I wouldn't mind trying that sometime (I've heard of it, but it was a while ago)

I guess I'll just have to keep experimenting. Gosh, darn it, I guess I'll just have to make some practice cakes.

I agree with belle2bl - something seems to have changed!

I only use BC and have for years. I have noticed no change at all. I even used both chocolate fudge and french vanilla just yesterday, and nothing different. I didn't see anything on any boxes lately that noted a change. Any idea when a 'change' was made?

I have been using better crocker for years and the flavors that I use seem to be the same to me. It's funny because just this past sunday, I bake a chocolate fudge cake from BC and it tasted fine! Thou it could be because that was my first time trying it, LOL.

I just tried BC for the first time this week, and the kids wouldn't touch the cupcakes! My 4 year old said that the chocolate tasted like dirt! I used chocolate fudge and butter flavors. DH took a bunch of them to work, and they asked why I changed my cake....they liked the old better. The comment about tasting like dirt is enough to send me back to using DH for my doctored mixes!

I always use DH but this week I thought I would give BC Devil's Food a try. HORRIBLE!!

I like to support the local grocery store but they can't meet Wal-Mart's price for DH so I thought I'd give BC a shot. I'm definately paying the price difference, I have 20 cakes due next week and I don't want to have to worry about the flavor.

I used to love Added Touch but since everyone is going the route of no transfat, it's just not the same. Sorry but celebration cakes are just not supposed to be healthy!

Oh, well!

I'm from Canada so maybe the boxes in the States haven't changed yet. But BC has been really yummy cakes that tastes like its been made from scratch but lately its not, it just tastes like cake mix cake.

I can't change to DH because its not made in nut free faculities so do you think if I add more of something? like pudding it would change the taste?

Thanks for your comments!

Maybe I'm the only one, But I don't have a "Set" brand of cake that I use. But I have noticed that I use DH more because Jewel always has them on sale for 10/$10. So I just but them in bulk. Otherwise I just use the store brand from Sav-A-Lot...In other words Cheap no name brand and to be honest I don't taste a difference between the two once they've been doctored.

chocolateandpeanutbutter, I think it is Pillsbury that has the white chocolate cake. It's been a while since I tried it, but it seemed okay. I like it with a raspberry filling.

You are all making me feel very promiscuous! LOL I have no brand loyalty, as I can't tell the difference once it is doctored anyway. I like to use the WalMart store brand mixes because they are the least expensive (I think 74 or 79 cents), but I also use DH and BC when they are on sale.

Thanks - raspberry filling is exactly what I would picture with this cake! Yumm!

What about adding white chocolate pudding mix to a white cake? Has anyone tried this? I had my dad bring me a bunch (we don't have that flavour here, except in fat-free or sugar-free or something) last time he came for a visit (he's in Michigan). Hmmm - I feel an experiment coming on...

What is the best way to enhance the French Vanilla Cake Mix? I like DH, but I have used BC--I don't like it as much.

I put white chocolate pudding in white cake mix. Just gives it a hint of flavor.

Uh-oh. Sent in the Daffy Duck cake with hubby today and he emailed me to ask if I did something different because the cake didn't taste the same! aaauuuggghhh!!! Told him to save me a piece when I meet him for lunch so I can check it out.

This will really tick me off!

I don't like Betty Crocker cake mixes, cookies or any other BC products. If I use a box mix, it is always Duncan Hines. Last month, I made my daughter a strawberry Pillsbury cake and it was very moist. No complaints on that one, but Betty Crocker (IMHO) is just terrible.

I called them and they told me they had changed the formula a couple of months ago, but only the high altitude stuff (no more special directions for high altitude). Said it shouldn't affect the taste. I said, "I got news for you......"

Well, I may have to do a private taste test between BC and DH. (big sigh!)
