I am farely new to the decorating game. I have tried a few times to paint of cakes, but it ends up looking like a 2 year old did it. What type of colors are you using? How are you thinning it down? What type of brushes are you using?

I have used the Wilton gel colors and just thinned them down with vanilla, and painted with a crayola brush. That's propably why I am having such trouble.

Could you help me out and point me in the right direction? I mean I've seen SOOO many beautiful cake here on CC that were painted, and I more get frustrated everytime I see them.

I'd love to help........I've only done a couple but I'll tell you what I do! I use americolor gels straight out of the bottle, don't thin them at all. I use the one stroke paint brushes, just because they are like the only ones I've found that the hairs dont' fall out after using them for a while (hair and cake....yuck)....other than that not much of a secret!! The middle one has painted on leaves and grass on the sides.

Welcome to CC! icon_biggrin.gif

What you need to get is some really good brushes! (I need to take my own advice) The best one's are in your regular art section of Michael's or HL. Make sure that the bristles are nice and point and lay flat the way you paint with them. Also, get some Americolor! Here on CC or some other popular sites like www.countrykitchensa.com
The americolor food coloring is almost like painting with acrylics...to me! And you don't have to water them down but, some colors you an use a little bit of water and get a cool effect. Check out my Dartboard cake and Purple Wedding cake. This is painting on fondant!
Good luck with painting for next time! There are a lot of pics here on CC!

to avoid hairs falling out of your brushes always wash them with cold water and don't squeeze or wring them to dry-or say said all my former art teachers

thanks but you know I actually stink at it LOL for some reason it doesn't look as bad on a cake as it does on paper LOL

KHalstead, I love your cakes! Do the americolors dry after painting with them or do they stay tacky?

KHalstead do you do the one stroke steps with your paintings? I need to learn that better than I do now.

peacock they dry completely in about 5 minutes or so depending on how thick you paint it on......sometimes I get some globs in the centers of the flowers and they might take 10 minutes to fully dry.....but once it's dry you can rub your hand over it and it won't bother it at all!!! doescakestoo- yes, I do the one stroke steps, but I haven't been formally taught so I just wing it LOL!!!

I used Americolor or Wilton from the bottle to a little dish and if I need some water to thin out I do that but just a little. I also use good brushes from the craft store and not the one that Wilton provides. Here are the two I did. They were my first two and so I hope to do more painted cakes. I love the technique.
