Ok, let me begin by saying I have been decorating as a hobby for a while but I use buttercream. I have a friend that wants a buttercream cake with fondant accents. Is royal icing the best glue to attach the fondant accents to the buttercream?

If they are not real heavy or going only on the top of the cake, I just brush a little piping gel onto the back of the piece and attach it to the buttercream. I just hold it on for a second and it stays real well.

if the pieces are small, thin and not heavy, you can also use water. what kind of fondant pieces will you be adding?

RI might melt, because of the butter in the BC. The easiest would be to use BC as the glue. Put on a small daub and hold the piece in place for a few seconds and all should be well.

I usually do buttercream with fondant accents and just pipe a little fresh buttercrem on the back of my fondant pieces to 'glue' them to the cake.

If the pieces are small I just use a tiny bit of water. Sometimes they will stick with nothing but the buttercream on your cake already.

Good thing I asked. They are circle some directly on the buttercream and some overlapping. And she also wants fondant elephant figure which I am still trying to figure out how I am going to make them.

Thanks for all the help.

Not sure what type of elephant you are looking to do, but this link to Wilton has fondant elephant directions. Jen

I did a five tier all buttercream birthday cake (see Brody's first in my pics) with all fondant cutouts. I just stuck them directly unto the buttercream and had no problems. After I was done with each tier I would put it in the fridge so the buttercream would harden a little around the cutouts. No slipping or sliding!!!! HTH thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
