I need to make a cake for a dance graduate...something contemporary and mature. She is 19 and will be going off to New York to start up a career there. It's a graduate / good luck cake. Any Ideas???

I've seen the Wilton ballet slipper pan decorated in a maturer way than girly pink slippers. They were done in red with roses all around the base of the cake - it was very beautiful! If she's into modern dance though, that could be more difficult, they always seem to be half naked and rolling around on top of each other icon_confused.gificon_lol.gif ! The stage idea is nice - how about a stage, curtains at either side with a bouquet of flowers laying on the stage? An idea!

well, now....
is she really going to be a ballarina?

or is she into JAZZ or MODERN!?!??!....

I'm betting if she's heading to NYC and its Great White Way, it's modern and/or jazz. (the need for ballarina's in NYC is severly limited)

so find out her dance speciality before designing the cake.

for both modern or jazz a shilohete of a dancer would be most appropriate. (it's one of the classic styles in thier dances to have a moment when the lighting does just that)

if jazz -- well, the most famous Jazz dancer and style in NYC was Bob Fosse. Unmistakeable!!! there was/is/and always will be only one Bob Fosse and the Fosse style. A black cake w/ the art and lettering in white would be ever so sleek, elegent, modern and JAZZ!!! See art below (be sure to read titles)

modern -- thank you Martha Graham. Tho' it has progrogressed beyond using the long flowing skirt, it too still has a few distinctinve poses.

and if she is an all around dancer, how about the words as in the art below?

knew I left out one -- TAP....unforunatley a style in decline.

(then of course there's Hip-Hop, Irish River Dance style, and we could go on and on.)

(yep, I do get a little sick and tired of everyone always thinking of ballet as DANCE....oh how boring, liimiting and pink! My experience lighting dance rectials is most girls by end of HS are in to modern, jazz and hip-hop....that is, after all, what they are used to seeing on all those music videos, etc.)

As usual, Doug has some great ideas. I don't have a need to make something like this, but now I want to anyway. I'm feeling inspired. Hey, it's good practice, right? I'm sure I could find someone to eat it!

I can't wait to see what CakeCraze creates!

Wow...thanks for all of the ideas. I love the silouhette & lettering ideas. You definetely have my mind going now. I will check on that dance style. I think it is modern. I'll have to post a pick when I am done.
